Staten Island, NY- The Wagner women's tennis team began its spring season with a home match against Stony Brook.
The Seahawks secured victories at #3 doubles and #4 singles, with four first-set wins in hand during singles play. However, the Seawolves (2-1 overall) mounted a comeback to claim a 6-1 dual match victory.
In doubles, junior Samantha Bentsianov and graduate student Daniela Hernandez earned a 6-4 win at #3 doubles, but Stony Brook took the second and third doubles sets with identical 6-3 scores.
Hernandez also delivered the Seahawks' lone singles victory, defeating Stony Brook's Kristi Boro 6-1, 6-4 at #4 singles. Despite first-set wins from freshman Liepa Sataite, senior Paula Uy, and sophomore Dariana Vera, the Seawolves fought back to secure all three matches in third sets.
"Though we certainly had our chances, we have to tip our caps to Stony Brook tonight. Both teams fought hard and they were better than us today" said Wagner Head Coach Jeff Menaker. "We competed well and I think we gained some insight into the level we need to achieve to win the NEC."
The Seahawks return to action Friday at 6pm vs Hofstra at the College of Staten Island Indoor Tennis Facility.
