Men's Basketball's Second Half Powers Seahawks Past Le Moyne

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's basketball team defeated the Le Moyne Dolphins by a score of 73-61 at the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 12-10 on the 2024-25 campaign and climb to 4-5 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. Le Moyne's record falls to 7-16 on its season with a 2-6 mark in conference action.

Five Seahawks scored in double-digits - senior Zaire Williams (16), graduate student Ja'Kair Sanchez (14), graduate student Zae Blake (14), junior R.J. Greene (12), and senior Javier Ezquerra (10) in a game where Wagner shot 21-37 from the field (56.8%), including 10-17 (58.8%) from beyond-the-arc.

In the second half alone, Wagner shot 13-16 from the floor (81.3%) compared to a 7-21 success rate (33.3%) for the Dolphins.

After 20 minutes of action, the Dolphins led 32-28 thanks to 11 points from sophomore AJ Dancler and an 18-4 advantage in points in the paint. The score remained close however, as Le Moyne was never able to mount a lead larger than six within the period. 

Williams lead all Seahawks with 10 points in the first half. A three-pointer from the Brooklyn native gave Wagner a 24-23 lead with 6:29 left in the half, but a 9-4 run by Le Moyne gave the Dolphins the halftime advantage.

To start the second half, Wagner found itself down 32-27 after four minutes of game time. From 16:40 to 3:59 in the second half the Seahawks would respond with their own 35-17 run, punctuated by Blake hitting his fourth three-pointer of the game.

The Green & White's bench outscored that of Le Moyne's by a mark of 22-3 throughout the second period.

In the end, the Seahawks prevailed by a score of 73-61 over the Dolphins, thanks in part to a 45-29 advantage in the second half.

Along with 16 points, Williams added five rebounds and five assists to his stat line. Ezquerra finished with four rebounds and five assists to go along with his 10 points.

Next up, Wagner will be back in action on Thursday, February 6 against LIU at the Spiro Sports Center. Tip is set for 7:00 pm.
