SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The Wagner men's water polo team put together a strong offensive showing on Sunday afternoon but ultimately fell 19-14 to George Washington in a competitive matchup at the St. James.
The Colonials started strong, taking advantage on fast breaks opportunities to build a 6-3 lead through the first eight minutes. The Seahawks found offense from freshman
Nadav Carmon and sophomore
Smith Connors, who each converted on power-play chances to keep Wagner within reach.
The Green & White responded with their best quarter of the day, outscoring George Washington 4–3 to cut the deficit to 9–7 at the half. Senior captain
Laszlo Strasser tallied couple of times, and junior
Patrick Ray also found the back of the net, followed by Connors, who sparked a comeback effort with a late goal.
Sophomore goalie
Ian Conway made several key saves during this stretch to slow the Colonials' momentum.
Both teams traded goals throughout the third frame in a back-and-forth exchange. Freshman
Kelly Murphy added an early goal scored and Strasser completed a hat trick for Wagner, but George Washington held on to a 13-9 advantage heading into the final period.
In the final quarter, the Colonials' offense pulled away, scoring six times to seal the win. Despite the margin, Wagner's attack continued to push, with two additional goals from freshman
Landon Castillo, and a goal from each, Murphy, Carmon and freshman
Aksel Gerhardstein, rounding out the scoring.
The Seahawks now return home to Staten Island for a game against ranked third and MAWPC team, Fordham, at the Spiro Sports Center on Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
