RICHMOND, Va. — The Wagner College men's basketball team opened its 2025–26 campaign on the road Monday night, falling 103–74 to Atlantic 10 member VCU at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Wagner (0–1) traded baskets with the Rams early, taking a 21–20 lead midway through the first half after junior
Huascar Cuevas buried back-to-back three-pointers. The contest was tied at 32 with just over five minutes remaining before VCU (1–0) closed the half on a 21–8 run to take a 51–40 advantage into the locker room.
Trailing 71–60 with 10:52 left in regulation, the Seahawks saw VCU use a 14–0 burst over the next three minutes to extend the margin to 85–60. The Rams continued to roll from there, pulling away to secure the 103–74 victory in their season opener.
Graduate student
Sam Smith led Wagner with 16 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. Cuevas added 13 points on a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while redshirt-senior
Jaden Baker finished with 11 points and four assists.
VCU connected on seven more three-pointers than Wagner and held a 44–37 edge on the glass.
The Seahawks return to action on Friday, November 11, for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against Seton Hall at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J.
