MADISON, N.J. — The men's and women's fencing teams each won four of their duals on Sunday at the Drew Invitational.
The women's team started off strong with two wins in their first three duals of the day, starting with a 20-7 win against Cleveland State, then defeating Detroit Mercy 18-6 two matches later. The Seahawks picked up another 20-7 victory against NJIT, before finishing their day with a 21-6 win over LIU.
On the men's side, the Seahawks bounced back from two straight dual losses by besting Detroit Mercy 24-3, a match that saw the foils win all nine of their bouts. They then won three straight close matches against Wheaton (16-11), LIU (14-13), and host Drew (14-13).
The freshmen led the way for Wagner, as
Jakub Vrtilek led both teams with 14 foil victories on the day.
Ana Margarita Paredes and
Sydney Brock each posted 11 victories in epee and sabre respectively, tied for the most on the women's team, while
Ashley Pullara won nine bouts in epee.
Seniors
Noah Beitel (sabre) and
Diego Lara (foil), and juniors
Flavio Vinci (sabre) and
Renata Ziganova (foil) each won 10 or more bouts throughout the event as well.
"We had a solid effort and performance today," said head coach
David Sierra. "I'm enthusiastic about the great start from both teams putting up winning records."
The Seahawks will return to the strip on Sunday, November 9, when they will compete at the Vassar Invitational. The first duals are set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Walker Field House.
