PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Wagner College men's and women's fencing teams wrapped up their participation in the Coach Nikki Franke Classic at Temple last weekend by sending four fencers to podiums.
Junior
Flavio Vinci won the men's sabre bracket by winning five straight bouts. Vinci earned the first seed and defeated MIT's Rohan Dalal (15-9), UNC's Nicky Wind (15-12), Boston College's Max Denner (15-5), UNC's Elden Wood (15-13), and finally Penn's Antonio Heathcock (15-13) in the championship.
Despite finishing 66th out of 84 men's epee fencers in the main pool, freshman
Jackson Wheeler performed well in the consolation pool, finishing second behind Florida's Thomas Dupree.
On the women's side, sophomore
Villo Nyiri placed third in the women's sabre bracket after three straight wins, including a 15-8 victory over fellow Seahawk, senior
Fanny Straub. Nyiri eventually lost to NYU's Rosemaire Benciu 15-8 in the bracket's semifinals.
Finally, despite finishing dead last in the main women's foil pool, senior
Kailey Marino rebounded in the consolation pool and finished third.
"Our performances this weekend were excellent," said head coach
David Sierra. "Not just the obvious podium finishes, but the entire lineup was fencing well and working together as a cohesive unit."
Wagner returns to the strip on Sunday, November 2, when the Seahawks partake in the Drew Invitational in Madison, NJ.
