Men's Basketball Set To Host Le Moyne On Saturday

The Wagner College men's basketball team will welcome Northeast Conference (NEC) member Le Moyne to the Spiro Sports Center for a 1:00 pm tip on Saturday, February 1.

 

Last Time Out

Wagner dropped to 3-5 in NEC play with a 61-73 loss at Stonehill. Zaire Williams led Wagner with 12 points as Keyontae Lewis added 11. Wagner shot 3-7 from the foul line in the second half and 3-9 throughout the whole game. Junior guard Chas Stinson hit a pull-up jump shot with 14:39 remaining in the second, and Wagner was never able to regain the lead from that point on. Junior Tyje Kelton nailed his third three-pointer with 5:43 left to make it a two-point game, 53-51. The Skyhawks shot 22-22 from the foul line in a 48-point second half to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit. 

 

Last Time In Loretto

On Sunday, January 26, the Seahawks pulled-off an impressive comeback against the Saint Francis U Red Flash, clawing back from a 19-point deficit with under eight minutes remaining in the game. Senior Zaire Williams led Wagner in scoring for the fifth game this season with 12, senior Di'Andre Howell-South added 12 as graduate student Ja'Kair Sanchez scored 11 of his points all in the second half. During the 23-4 run, graduate student Ja'Kair Sanchez scored seven points, senior Javier Ezquerra two three-pointers, junior Keyontae Lewis scored four points, and Howell-South scored three all unanswered by the Red Flash, who found themselves trailing by three after a crucial Sanchez layup with 25 seconds to play.

Comeback Kids

Per Ryan Peters and Ron Ratner of the NEC, on Sunday, Wagner earned the sixth-best comeback of the 2024-25 Division I collegiate basketball season according to KenPom. Based on KenPom's "Minimum Win Probability" metric, Wagner had a 0.6 percent chance of winning with a little under eight minutes remaining as the Seahawks trailed Saint Francis U, 63-44. The Green & White then went on a 22-0 run to take a three-point on a Sanchez layup. During Wagner's run, they held the Red Flash scoreless on ten straight possessions, forcing six turnovers within that span of time. Offensively, the Seahawks went 8-9 from the field 88.9% during the last eight minutes of the game.

 

Among The NEC 

Since the new year, Zaire Williams is seventh in scoring with 15.3 points, third in steals with 2.1 per game, sixth in three-pointers made per game with 2, and eighth in free throw percentage at 81.8%. Graduate student Zae Blake ranks second in the NEC in three-point percentage, shooting 10-20 (50%) from beyond-the-arc since January 3. Blake is 19th in points per game with 11, including a 20-point showing on January 5 against FDU. Senior Javier Ezquerra sits in fourth in assists per game with 4.1 assists across his seven conference appearances this season. Ezquerra is second in assist-to-turnover ratio with a mark of 2.4 in the category. Junior Keyontae Lewis is fifth in the NEC in offensive rebounds per game, grabbing 2.6 per outing. Since January 3, the Seahawks are third in the conference in three-point percentage with a success rate of 33.8% on a 46-136 clip.

 

Wagner DNA

Since December 4, Wagner has ranked in the top 10 in scoring defensive out of 355 Division I teams. At their peak, the Seahawks were ranked third in the category. Currently, the Green & White allow the sixth least points per game in the country at a tune of 60.7 points per game, trailing ACC member Duke by 1.1 points per game. Williams is 65th in the nation in steals per game at 1.94 swipes per game.

 

Crashing The Glass

The Seahawks lead the NEC in offensive rebounding percentage, grabbing an offensive rebound on 32.5% of their shots attempted. Wagner earns the most offensive rebounds per game as a team with 11 since the start of the new year. At a margin of +4.8, Wagner ranks 63rd nationally in rebounding margin.

 

The Series

Last season was the first home-and-home meeting between these two programs. The Seahawks won the first meeting on Staten Island, 80-57, before dropping their matchup 28 days later in Syracuse by a score of 56-70.

 

Scouting The Dolphins

Le Moyne comes into Saturday's game with a 7-15 record, including a 2-5 mark in the NEC. The Dolphins have four players scoring above 11 points per game - Carmody (11.9), Koroma (11.8), Owens (11.6), Dancler (11.2). Owens and Koroma grab 7.4 and 7.1 rebounds per game, respectively.

Wagner will welcome LIU to the Spiro Sports Center on Saturday, February 1. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm upon Grymes Hill.
