Women's Water Polo Picks Up Two Victories At Princeton Invitational

Princeton, NJ - The No.18 Wagner women's water polo team picked up two victories to begin their season at the Princeton Invitational. The Seahawks defeated Bucknell and Azusa Pacfic each by of score of 17-10 before falling to No.10 Princeton, 20-9, at DeNunzio Pool.

Game 1 Results - #18 Wagner 17, Bucknell 10

The game started with Bucknell taking the opening goal, setting the tone early. However, Wagner quickly responded, with freshman Alex Andrist scoring to tie the game. The first quarter remained tightly contested, with Bucknell holding a narrow 3-2 lead at the end of the period.

The tide turned dramatically in the second quarter, thanks to a standout quarter from sophomore Catherine Mentz, who scored three goals. Wagner's offense exploded with seven goals in the quarter, flipping the script and propelling them to a commanding 9-4 lead by halftime.

Bucknell fought back in the third quarter, narrowing the gap slightly to 11-7, but Wagner's defense held firm, and their counterattacks continued to find the back of the net. In the final quarter, Wagner's offensive depth was on full display, with six different Seahawks scoring a goal, adding six more to their total and sealing the 17-10 victory.

Game 2 Results - #18 Wagner 17, Azusa Pacfic 10

The game got off to a strong start for the Seahawks, with senior Carlota Alonso scoring the opening goal of the game. Alonso lead the nation in goals scored last season. Wagner's offense continued to shine as they took a commanding 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their defense was equally impressive, limiting the Cougars scoring opportunities and controlling the pace of the game.

In the second quarter, Wagner continued their dominance, outscoring the Cougars 5-2 to extend their lead to 11-3 at halftime. The Seahawks' balanced attack and solid defense left little room for their opponents to mount a serious challenge.

The third quarter saw a slight shift, as Azusa Pacific found some offensive rhythm, narrowing the gap to 13-8. However, just before the buzzer, junior Magali Ogg scored a crucial goal with just 4 seconds left, giving Wagner a 13-8 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Wagner sealed the win with four more goals, finishing the game with a 17-10 victory.

Game 3 Results - #18 Wagner 9, #10 Princeton

The game got off to a rough start for Wagner as Princeton came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 5-0 lead. 

In the second quarter, the Tigers continued their dominant play, outscoring the Seahawks 6-2 to extend their lead to 11-2 by halftime. 

The third quarter saw Princeton maintain their control adding five more goals, pushing their lead to 16-3.

In the final quarter, Princeton kept up the pressure, finishing the game with four more goals as Wagner fell, 20-9.

The Tigers have won the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship two years in a row.

Next Up, the Seahawks are back in action at the Bruno Clasic against Salem and No.20 Harvard on day one and Siena and No.12 Indiana on day two.
