Cambridge, MA - The Wagner women's water polo team wrapped up non-conference play in the Blodgett Pool at Harvard University from Saturday, February 24 to Sunday, February 25. The Seahawks would take on #20 Brown and Santa Clara on day one of competition, and then Mercyhurst and #19 Harvard on the second day of the tournament.
Wagner only has one more game that is a not a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent, which is when the Green & White head to Princeton, NJ to play the Tigers on Thursday, March 28.
Game 1 Results: #18 Wagner 12 - #20 Brown 14
After one quarter, Wagner held a 4-2 lead over Brown. Senior Andrea Arias notched the first goal for the Seahawks, and was joined by junior Carlota Alonso, sophomore Magali Ogg, and freshman Ana Arias to round out the first quarter scorers. In the second frame, both teams score twice, as Alonso and Ogg would find the back of the net. At halftime, the score was 6-4, Wagner.
In the third quarter, Wagner was outscored 6-2. Alonso scored her third as senior Grace Coleman would join her teammate in the scoring column. Heading into the fourth, Wagner was down, 10-8. In the final frame, the Seahawks would outscore the Bears, 4-3. This would not be enough, however, and Wagner would lose its first match in ten games, 14-12. Carlota Alonso scored two more times in the fourth to bring her game total to five goals. Andrea Arias would complete her hat-trick a minute into the fourth quarter, as Ogg would add her second of the game midway through the quarter.
Game 2 Results: #18 Wagner 12 - Santa Clara 3
After holding the Broncos scoreless in the first half, Wagner jumped out to an 8-0 halftime lead and never looked back. The Seahawks scored three goals in the first quarter and five goals in the second quarter. Graduate student captain Pip Nash scored the first goal of the game less than thirty seconds after ball-drop, as senior Mar Navarro would strike less than a minute later. Navarro would end up scoring twice in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Seahawks spread the wealth as four players scored. Andrea Arias and Carlota Alonso both netted their first of the game during the frame. Ogg would score two goals in the second quarter. Navarro would complete her hat-trick midway through the period, scoring the final goal of the half.
In the third, sophomore Genevieve Bland scored the lone goal for the Green & White with less than a minute remaining in the quarter. Bland would also score in the fourth quarter, and she was joined by Ana Arias and junior Lizzy Koerper to put away the Broncos, 12-3.
Game 3 Results: #18 Wagner 5 - Mercyhurst 0 (Forfeit)
Game 4 Results: #18 Wagner 10 - #19 Harvard 6
For the third time in as many games, the Seahawks held a lead after the first quarter of play. Ogg got the ball rolling two minutes into the game, as Alonso scored two during the frame. After the first, the Seahawks held a 3-1 lead over the Crimson. In the second quarter, both teams would go scoreless. At half, Wagner maintained its 3-1 lead.
The first goal of the second half for either team occurred almost six minutes into the third quarter, as Ana Arias would make the score 4-1. After a few Crimson scores, Andrea Arias tallied her first of the contest, as Wagner would head into the final frame of the weekend leading 5-4. A five-goal fourth quarter propelled the Seahawks to their fourth win against a ranked opponent this season. Carlota Alonso would explode for three goals in the fourth quarter, as she would be accompanied by Andrea Arias and junior captain Casey Taylor in the scoring column. Taylor has brought her scoring total up to nine goals on the season. Wagner would prevail over Harvard, 10-6.
In goal, three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Francesca Sena spent all weekend in net for the Seahawks. Freshman Jillian Hemming would sub-in for Sena in the fourth quarter against Santa Clara.
Throughout the weekend, Wagner would hold their opponents scoring to 1.67 goals in the first half.
Next up, Wagner will take a three-week break before being back in action on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, at the VMI Tournament. There, the Seahawks will take on MAAC opponents Mount St. Mary's and Marist on Saturday, before facing-off against Siena on Sunday.
