Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College basketball team fell 73-72 against CCSU on Thursday night at the Spiro Sports Center.
Wagner gained possession with 16 seconds remaining and had a chance to win at the buzzer, but could not capitalize.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 6-7 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Blue Devils improve to 10-3 in league action.
Sophomore
Julian Brown led all scorers with 17 points, while fellow sophomore
Keyontae Lewis added 15 points. Juniors
Javier Ezquerra,
Tahron Allen, and
Melvin Council Jr. all contributed 11 points as all five starters scored in double figures on the night.
The Green and White started fast and established a 20-point lead with 5:43 to play in the first half, as a traditional three-point play by Council made it 32-12 in favor of the Seahawks.
CCSU cut the deficit to 37-28 at the half, tied the game with 7:19 in the second half, and established a 71-62 lead with 1:29 to play.
The Seahawks rallied to set up a wild finish, as a Council three and an Ezquerra layup made it a one-possession game with 38 seconds to play.
A pair of Brown free throws made it a one-point game with 22 seconds left, but the Blue Devils hung on late for the win.
Wagner held the lead for 32:07 minutes throughout the game and had a 15-6 advantage in fast break points.
Next up, the Seahawks will take on LIU on Sunday in a nationally televised contest at noon on CBSSN.
