Men's Basketball Set To Matchup With Maryland Eastern Shore On Sunday

The Wagner College men's basketball team will face-off against MEAC member Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday, December 8 at the Hytche Center. Tip-off set for 7:00 pm on DELMARVA Sports Network.

 

Last Time Out

Wagner defeated Coppin State on Wednesday, December 4 at the Spiro Sports Center by a score of 65-52. The Seahawks earned a wire-to-wire victory over the Hawks, scoring 37 points in the second half. Graduate student Ja'Kair Sanchez scored a season-high 22 points, the most by a Seahawk this season. Junior R.J. Greene also set new team-highs in free throws made (10) and attempted (14). Senior guard Javier Ezquerra chipped in nine with six rebounds and five assists.

 

Number Three From Three

Sanchez shot an impressive 4-6 from beyond-the-arc against Coppin State. Sanchez finished the game with a 7-11 shooting clip with a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

 

Iron Man

Ezquerra leads the NEC in minutes played per game with 34.6. The San Juan, Puerto Rico native ranks fourth in the conference averaging 4.4 assists per game and 15th in steals with 1.4 per game.

 

The Wagner DNA

The Seahawks allow the ninth least amount of points to their opponents nationally. With an average of 58.8 points allowed, the Green & White also lead the conference in points allowed.  Over the last five games, the Seahawks are allowing only 55.2 points per game Wagner has kept its opponents to under sixty points in four of the last five games. In each of their last five games, the Seahawks have prevented their opposition from shooting 50% or better from the field. The Seahawks are in the top-fifth in the nation in turnovers forced per game with 14.88.



 

Wagner Amongst The NEC

The Seahawks' 20 free throw makes against the Eagles is the fourth-highest mark in the NEC this season. Wagner holds its opponents to a 43.1% success rate from the field, tied for first in the conference with Stonehill. The Seahawks limit opponents to an NEC-best 31.5 rebounds per game. With 68 steals across eight games, the Green & White are tied with CCSU with 8.5 steals per contest for the first place spot in the conference. Offensively, Wagner is third in the circuit in team three-point shooting percentage, with a 34% shooting clip. Tyje Kelton ranks third in the conference in three-point field goals made per game with 1.9.

 

The Series

The Seahawks and Hawks will play in their inaugural meeting on Sunday. These two programs have never faced-off against one another before Sunday's meeting.

 

Scouting The Hawks

Maryland Eastern Shore comes into Sunday's game with a 2-10 record. The Hawks are 2-0 at home this season, picking up wins against  Penn State Schuylkill and Gallaudet.

UMES is led by KC Shaw who scored 21 points in the Hawks most recent game against Longwood. Shaw also scored 18 points against UConn on October 30, and averages a team-high three assists per game. Jalen Ware leads UMES with 5.9 rebounds per outing.

Wagner will continue its road stint with a contest at NJIT on Saturday, December 14. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
