Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's basketball team defeated Penn State Scranton on Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 8-5 heading into Northeast Conference (NEC) competition. The Nittany Lions fall to 8-6 on their season.Â
The Seahawks set a new program record in largest margin of victory with 90. The previous record was set back in 1957 when Wagner defeated Merchant Marine Academy by 65.
The Green & White jumped out to a 21-5 lead before the first media timeout and would head into halftime with a 54-15 lead.
All seven Seahawks who saw action scored in the first 20 minutes of action, as senior Di'Andre Howell-South scored a first-half team-high 11 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Zavier Fitch added 10 points in 10 minutes with four rebounds and three assists of his own.
In the second half, Wagner scored a season-high 66 points in the frame thanks to a 61.5% shooting percentage from beyond-the-arc. Senior Zaire Williams and senior Tyje Kelton combined to make seven three-pointers on only 11 attempts in the second period.
Williams would finish the game as the leading scorer for Wagner with 24 points on 9-17 from the field including 5-13 from three. Â
Fitch finished with a career-high of 21 points while also adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals to his game stat line.
Senior Di'Andre Howell-South set a personal-best in points in a Wagner uniform with 20 to go along with six rebounds and four assists.Â
Kelton finished the game with 17 points , junior R.J. Greene chipped in 16 and a career-high 10 assists, senior Javier Ezquerra scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.Â
Junior Keyontae Lewis scored eight points and corralled nine rebounds in an efficient 19 minutes of action.
Wagner was one three-point attempt away from tying the program record in the category in one game. The Seahawks shot 35 three-pointers against the Nittany Lions. The original record was set at 36 back on December 1, 1996 when Wagner faced-off against FIU.
The Green & White set season-highs in assists with 34 and steals with 22 as a team, as well as season-bests in field goal makes with 45 and field goal attempts with 77.
The Seahawks allowed zero fast break points and points off of turnovers to the Nittany Lions.
In the end, Wagner would prevail over Penn State Scranton, 120-30.
Next up, Wagner will start Northeast Conference (NEC) action with a matchup against the Chicago State Cougars on Friday, January 3. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
