Men's Basketball Hosts Springfield On Saturday

WATCH | Live Stats | Game Notes

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's basketball team will host Springfield on Saturday, with tip-off set for 4:00 pm on NECFrontRow.

Last Time Out

Junior R.J. Greene's buzzer-beater gave the Wagner College men's basketball team a 60-58 victory at Boston University on Tuesday night.
Greene tied the game with 0.6 seconds to play, then won the game for Wagner in a wild sequence. The Seahawks erased a 25-20 halftime deficit to come back for their first road win of the season.

Trailing 38-28 with 14 minutes to play, Greene scored four straight points to move Wagner back into striking distance, before a three by senior Javier Ezquerra moved the Green and White within three points at 44-41 with 7:25 to play.

Down 57-54 with under a minute to play, Greene got the Seahawks within one with a layup. After the Terriers missed three of four free throws, Greene became the hero in the final seconds.

Greene's Big Night

R.J. Greene scored all of his season-high 19 points in the second half on Tuesday, including four points in the final second of the game. The first-year Seahawk also led the Green and White with eight rebounds on the night.

In just 23 minutes off the bench, Greene connected on 8-14 from the field to lead the Seahawks.

Williams Starts To Heat Up

Senior Zaire Williams scored a season-high 18 points at Boston University while grabbing a career-high five steals against the Terriers. This marked Williams' first time scoring in double figures this season after scoring 10 or more points in his last four games last year before missing the remainder of the season due to injury.

The Floor General

Senior Javier Ezquerra led Wagner with six assists against Boston University. Last year's Northeast Conference (NEC) leader in assists leads the Seahawks with 42 points on the year and is currently the NEC leader with 4.4 assists per game.

The Wagner DNA

Despite the tough schedule, Wagner is 32nd nationally in scoring defense at 61 points per game, which also leads the Northeast Conference (NEC).

The Gauntlet

Wagner is 2-3 on the season, but has the 23rd toughest schedule in the country, according to KenPom. The Seahawks recently faced consecutive Big East opponents after opening the season at Big Ten member Rutgers and will face Big East foe Georgetown on Tuesday.

The Bench Makes A Difference

A year after being limited to just seven scholarship players for a majority of last season, the Seahawks have received solid production from their bench during the first four games of the new year. Wagner is averaging 24.2 bench points per game, which is 43.3% of their total offensive production per game.

The Series

Saturday's game marks the sixth meeting between the two teams, with Wagner holding a 3-2 all-time series lead. Both teams have not met since the 1976-77 season and have only met once in Wagner's Division I era.

Welcome Elijah Brown

Earlier this week, Wagner announced the signing of Elijah Brown.

Last season, the 6-4 guard led Life Center Academy in scoring with 834 points, which led the state of New Jersey. Throughout his junior season, Brown averaged 20.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 40 games.

This season, Brown is set to compete at Hillcrest Prep in Arizona. Brown is the first signee of the Seahawks' 2025 class.

Scouting The Pride

Springfield enters Saturday's game with a 1-4 record. After earning a win over William Peace, Springfield most recently fell 78-49 at Amherst.
