Men's Basketball Set To Take On #22 St. John's On Wednesday

Queens, NY - 
The Wagner College men's basketball team will take on Big East member #22 St. John's on Wednesday, with tip-off set for 6:30 pm on FS2.

This marks Wagner's second game against a Top-25 opponent in the first three games of the season.

Last Time Out

Five Seahawks scored in double figures Wagner earned a 94-52 victory over Manor College on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center. With the win, Wagner has now won seven consecutive home openers.

Two games into the season, Wagner is 23rd in the country with a three-point field goal percentage of 44.4%. The Seahawks hit on 15-29 shots from downtown against Manor, with senior Tyje Kelton connecting on five threes.

The Floor General

Senior Javier Ezquerra, the Northeast Conference (NEC) leader in assists during the 2023-24 season, is third in the country in assist/turnover ratio (12.00) after dishing out 10 assists against Manor as part of the first double-double of his career. 

The Series

Wagner is 2-19 all-time against St. John's, with both wins over the Red Storm coming in the 1950s under head coach Herb Sutter. Wednesday's matchup marks the first meeting between the two teams since the 2019-20 season.

Fitch Emerges 

Freshman Zavier Fitch scored his first career points against Manor and has seen action in both games so far this season. Fitch finished with seven points in the second game of his collegiate career.

Scouting The Red Storm

St. John's enters Wednesday's matchup with a 2-0 record and is ranked for the first time in five years, coming in 22nd in the AP poll after wins over Fordham and Quinnipiac. 

The Bench Makes A Difference 

A year after being limited to just seven scholarship players for a majority of last season, the Seahawks have received solid production from their bench during the first two games of the new year. Averaging 34.00 bench points per game, Wagner leads the NEC in bench points after week one.

Next Up 

The Seahawks will face their second consecutive Big East opponent on Saturday, when Wagner travels to Seton Hall, with tip-off set for noon.
