Women’s Soccer Picks Up Statement Win Over CCSU, 4-1

Staten Island, NY - In a rematch of last season's Northeast Conference (NEC) championship game, the Wagner women's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over CCSU on Thursday night at Hameline Field.

Senior Claire Janis got the party started for the Seahawks in the 10th minute with a goal after the Blue Devils goalkeeper was brought out. Junior Izzy Gomez doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a shot into the top-left corner right, courtesy of Janis on the assist. This season, Gomez is tied for second in the NEC with four goals.
Six minutes later, a corner kick from sophomore Alana Goldsmith set up a header to freshman Deirdre Meberg for another Wagner goal as the Seahawks took a 3-0 lead headed into the locker room.

In the second half, the Green & White extended their margin 4-0 following a corner kick opportunity that bounced off a few CCSU defenders and found senior Olivia Rubbo for a line drive past the Blue Devil goalkeeper.

CCSU would get on the board in the 86th minute, but the Seahawks prevailed for the 4-1 victory.

Wagner tallied 13 shots with six on goal compared to CCSU's 11 shots with five on goal. Senior goalkeeper Sam Hughes recorded four saves.

The Seahawks improve to 4-4-5 (3-1-1) as they sit at fourth in the NEC standings.

The Green & White are back on the field on Sunday October 13th in Erie, PA at 1pm as they will square of against conference newcomer Mercyhurst.
