Men's Basketball To Face Off With Le Moyne On Thursday Night

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's basketball team will open the month of February with a home matchup against Le Moyne on Thursday at 7:00 pm on NECFrontRow.
 
The Floor General
 
Against CCSU, junior Javier Ezquerra led the Seahawks with a career-high 22 points, 18 of which came on 6-9 accuracy from downtown. For the week, Ezquerra averaged 12.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds per game, and 3.5 assists per game. He is now shooting 36.4 percent from long range in NEC play. Ezquerra has recorded four or more assists in eight of Wagner's last nine games and leads the league with 4.16 assists per game.
 
Council Continues To Impress
 
Junior Melvin Council Jr. has scored in double figures in nine of Wagner's last 10 games and is the Seahawks' leading scorer at 14.1 points per game, which ranks seventh in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The first-year Seahawk is also ninth in rebounding (5.5), seventh in assists (3.42), third in free throw percentage (.815), and second in minutes played (33.95)

At 62.7 points per game, Wagner ranks 9th in the country in scoring defense while also leading the NEC.
 
Taking Care Of The Ball
 
Wagner's 9.8 turnovers per game are 24th in the country and first in the NEC. As a team Wagner's assist/turnover ratio of 1.31 is second in the NEC. Individually, the Seahawks have two of the top three players in the NEC in assist/turnover ratio in Ezquerra (2nd / 2.32) and Council (3rd / 2.24).
 
Downtown Staten Island
 
Offensively, Wagner already has four games with 10+ threes on the season, the most since the 2019-20 season.
 
Defensively, the Green and White is holding opponents to 30% shooting from long range, which leads the NEC and was good for 32nd in the nation.
 
Lewis' Big Week


Sophomore Keyontae Lewis had his best week of the season in Wagner's games against Merrimack and CCSU. He posted 9.5 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game and made 60.0 percent of his shot opportunities. His 13 points against CCSU on Saturday was a season-high. He also matched his career-high with 11 rebounds in that same game.
 
The Series
 
Prior to this year's two meetings in NEC action, the Seahawks and Dolphins met once before, with Wagner earning a 91-81 victory during the 1968-69 season.
 
Scouting The Dolphins
 
Le Moyne enters Thursday night's game with a 9-11 overall mark and 4-2 record in NEC play. The Dolphins have won three straight games going into Thursday night, most recently earning an 87-74 victory over LIU.
