Football Travels To FBS Member Navy

WATCH | Live Stats | Game Notes

Annapolis, MD -
The Wagner College football team will travel to FBS member Navy on Saturday, September 9, with kickoff set for 3:30 pm on CBS Sports Network.

Passing Game Shines

In his Seahawk debut, graduate student quarterback Steven Krajewski threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns, 131 of which went to junior Trevor Shorter, who finished with five catches and a score on the night. Both Krajewski and Shorter were named Prime Performers by the Northeast Conference (NEC) on Monday.

Krajewski's 334 passing yards are the most by a Wagner quarterback in a single game since Seahawk Hall of Famer John Sciarra passed for 409 yards against Central Connecticut in 2005.

The veteran signal-caller became the first Wagner quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards in a game since Luke Massei in 2017 and first quarterback to do so in a non-overtime contest since Matt Abbey threw for 305 yards vs. Sacred Heart on September 30, 2006.

Krajewski completed 19 passes and found eight different targets on the night.

Captains Lead The Way Defensively

Defensive captains John Gioia and Junior Wily combined for 21 tackles against Fordham in week one. Gioia led the way with 11 stops, including one tackle for loss, with Wily adding 10 total tackles and a tackle for loss.

Adeyemi's Strong Opener

In his second year on Grymes Hill, Olanrewaju Adeyemi recorded two sacks against Fordham. After recording just one tackle during the 2022 season, the Staten Island native finished with three stops against the Rams while recording the Seahawks' lone two sacks of the contest.

The Other Side Of The Hall

Graduate student Prince Hall saw his first action on defense in his Seahawk career. After competing at running back from 2019-2022 and rushing for 105 yards in his career, Hall made five tackles against Fordham in his first game at linebacker.

Block Party

Wagner's special teams blocked an extra point attempt in Week one. The Seahawks were one of 14 FCS teams to record at least one blocked kick.

Marzola Makes An Impact

In his first game as a Seahawk, punter Bailey Marzola averaged 45 yards per punt on Saturday, tied for 16th among all FCS punters.

The Wagner – Navy Connection

Wagner special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Jim Munson has a personal connection to Navy football. His son James is a 2018 graduate of the Naval Academy and played football for the Midshipmen for three years. He is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps.

The Series

Saturday's game marks the first meeting between Wagner and Navy on the gridiron. This marks the second time the Seahawks have faced off against one opponent from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) after previously traveling to Temple in 2019.

Wagner vs. FBS Opponents

Wagner has played 15 games against FBS teams and faced off against at least one opponent from college football's highest division in each of the last 11 fall seasons.

Wagner will play two FBS opponents for the sixth time in program history in 2023. In 2015, the Seahawks played at Rice and at BYU while in 2016 the Green & White traveled to UMass and Boston College. In 2019, Wagner faced UConn and Florida Atlantic. During the 2021 fall season, Wagner took on Buffalo and Temple. Last season, Wagner faced off against Rutgers and Syracuse.

The Seahawks nearly pulled off their first upset of an FBS opponent in the 2019 opener against UConn, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Huskies before falling 24-21. Thanks to an interception return for a touchdown by defensive back Myron Morris and two rushing touchdowns by Dymitri McKenzie, the Seahawks were within striking distance late in the fourth quarter but fell short in the final minutes.

In their first-ever meeting against an 85-scholarship opponent, the 2012 Seahawks dropped a hard-fought 7-3 contest at FAU in Boca Raton. That 2012 Wagner team opened the season 0-3, before reeling off nine straight wins en route to the program's first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) championship and an ensuing NCAA FCS first-round playoff win over Colgate.

Scouting The Midshipmen

Navy enters Saturday's game with an 0-1 mark on the season after falling 42-3 to Notre Dame in Dublin to open the 2023 season on August 26. The Midshipmen will have the longest regular season in the country.

The traditionally run heavy offense is led by senior quarterback Tai Lavatai and junior fullback Daba Fofana.

The Schedule

The Northeast Conference (NEC) opener is set for September 16, when the Seahawks travel to Sacred Heart.

This year's home opener will take place on September 23, when Wagner hosts Merrimack at Hameline Field.

The penultimate non-conference game of the season will take place on September 30, when the Seahawks travel to Rutgers for the second consecutive season.

Following a bye week, the Seahawks will play five straight conference games. After a road contest at Saint Francis U, Wagner will host three straight home games against CCSU (10/21), Stonehill (10/28), and Duquesne (11/4), before traveling to LIU on November 11 for the final conference contest of the season.

The Seahawks will round out the 2023 season against Post University on November 18 at Hameline Field.

Wagner On National TV

Wagner's matchup at Saint Francis U will air on CBS Sports Network as part of the NEC's tv package.

The Seahawks and Red Flash will now play on Thursday, October 12, with kickoff set for 7:00 pm.

This marks the NEC's first-ever nationally televised linear football game. Wagner's game at Navy on September 9 will also air on CBSSN.
