Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops Both Games In Saturday Doubleheader

Cary, NC - The Wagner baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader on Saturday, losing 17-6 to Penn State and 14-12 to Holy Cross.

In the first game of the day after Friday's offensive explosion, the Seahawks were more quiet against Penn State starter Travis Luensmann.

Although Wagner was able to score two runs in the second inning and get on base with several hit by pitches and walks, the team collected just one hit in its first two turns through the order.

The chances were there, but Penn State's defense remained firm, with Wagner leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning and a runner on third with no outs in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Zach Gorman kept the Seahawks afloat, tossing 4.1 innings, striking out four batters and allowing just one run before back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning chased him from the mound.

Senior Henry Martinez and sophomore Mateo Matthews each added two-RBI doubles in the ninth inning. But the runs kept coming Penn State's way all day, ultimately ending Wagner's four game win streak.

Against Holy Cross the runs came early and often. Senior DiMaggio Cazares got things started with a two-RBI single to left in the second inning. The next batter was Matthews and he launched a no-doubt home run to deep right field.

The Crusaders bounced back with a vengeance, capping off their seven-run third inning with a grand slam.

Despite trailing 7-5, Wagner was not to be deterred. In the fourth inning Matthews went yard again to make it a one-score ball game. Senior David Melfi then joined in on the home run barrage the next inning with a two-run shot to right field, which helped Wagner retake the lead.

Holy Cross attempted to rebound in the top of the sixth, but a 4-6-3-2 triple play ended the inning. Senior Maimu Kobayashi then led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple to center field, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

On the mound, sophomore Connor Hayden kept Holy Cross off the scoreboard for four innings before walking in a runner and ceding mound duties to senior Ruben Del Castillo.

Wagner couldn't escape the trouble, however, as it gave up the lead in the top of the seventh.

Although senior Cody Bey tied the game at 12 in the eighth inning, it wasn't enough as Holy Cross sealed the deal with a two-run ninth inning.

The Green & White will finish their weekend trip in Cary, NC with a rematch against Dartmouth on Sunday at 10:00 am.
