Chris Conniff's Walk-Off Single Gives Seahawks 4-3 Win Over Dartmouth

Cary, NC - The Wagner baseball team won Sunday against Dartmouth on a walk-off single by junior Chris Conniff. The 4-3 win completed the weekend sweep against the Big Green and moved the Seahawks back to .500 on the year.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Conniff delivered on a 1-0 count with a line drive single into right field. Freshman Zack Kent breezed into home as the Seahawks hounded Conniff in the infield.

The victory helped move Wagner to .500 for the weekend and on the year.

Pitching was the name of the game in this one as both starters churned through the lineups.

Sophomore Frankie Wright shined in his third start of the season, lasting seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven batters.

Despite coughing up a lead to Dartmouth in the second inning, Wright fired six scoreless innings and from the third inning on gave up just one hit and struck out six batters.

The slim margin kept the Seahawks alive and it all came together in the fifth inning.

A double by senior Griffin Selby kicked off the inning. Senior DiMaggio Cazares then hit a double of his own to the opposite field, scoring Selby and tying the game at two.

The next batter, sophomore Mateo Matthews, followed up his seven RBI day on Saturday with another RBI to take the lead, this time on a single to right field.

Wright continued to make life hard for Dartmouth's offense. He struck out the side in the seventh inning, marking the fourth batter in a row he sat down via strikes.

Due to a high pitch count, however, Wright gave way to the bullpen to protect the 3-2 lead with six outs remaining. Graduate student Alec Burnett was given the task, but he walked in the tying run.

Dartmouth threatened again in the ninth inning, but freshman Andrew Rucci struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to send the tie game into the bottom half of the inning.

The Seahawks had to find some offense fast and they got it from Conniff.

Matthews got on base with a single before back-to-back hit by pitches juiced the bases for the St. John's transfer. Conniff delivered on a 1-0 count and ended Wagner's weekend on a high note.

Wagner will return to Staten Island on Tuesday for its home opener against Rutgers at 3:00 pm.
