Baseball Completes Sweep of Radford with Six-Run Rally in Eighth

Radford, VA - The Wagner baseball team completed the weekend sweep against Radford thanks to a six run eighth inning rally. It was senior Cody Bey who drove in the game-winning runs as the Seahawks came back to win 14-7 on Sunday.

Radford took a crucial 7-4 lead into the eighth inning, but a huge rally by the Seahawks was pending.

The Seahawks collected six hits in the inning, started off by a double from redshirt junior Xavier Ulrich. Senior DiMaggio Cazares then singled before senior Griffin Selby got the runs rolling with an RBI single.

Sophomore Matthew Kenney then reached base to load the bases, which led to an RBI single from senior Maimu Kobayashi. Junior Chris Conniff then tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

But the offensive output wouldn't stop there. Bey doubled in Kobayashi and pinch running sophomore Xavier Baker to give Wagner back the lead.

Senior David Melfi then made it a three-run lead with a single up the middle.

After trailing by three runs heading into its final six outs, Wagner tacked on ten runs to forcibly take over the ball game.

Freshman Andrew Rucci picked up the win in relief.

Radford took an early lead in the first inning, but Melfi emerged once again. After going 4-7 with four RBIs in Friday's doubleheader, Melfi continued his stellar weekend with a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead. Melfi finished the weekend with a .500 batting average and seven RBIs. He even flashed his leather, gunning down three base runners defensively.

Despite Wagner's lead, the Highlanders chipped away.

Sophomore Frankie Wright got through 3.1 innings, but he and freshman Jason Masick combined to give up three earned runs in the fourth inning.

Radford continued to get to the pitching staff in the seventh inning as graduate student John LaPointe surrendered a three-run home run to Julian Rojas.

The home team led 7-4 before Wagner's offensive onslaught in the eighth inning.

The Seahawks tacked on four more runs in the ninth inning to propel them to victory.

Graduate student Alec Burnett shut down Radford's response in the bottom of the eighth before yielding no hits and striking out the final batter in the ninth inning.

Kobayashi, Conniff, Selby all had three hits on the day while Bey had four.

Melfi picked up three RBIs and Bey had four RBIs as well.

Up next for the Green & White is a four-game weekend at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, NC.

Wagner will face Dartmouth on Friday, March 3, before playing Penn State, Holy Cross and Dartmouth again to finish out the weekend.
