Radford, VA - The Wagner baseball team picked up two wins in its doubleheader against Radford on Friday. It won 7-3 in the first game and 11-2 in the second game.
In game one, the Seahawks got a big game out of senior David Melfi.
Melfi got things started with an opposite field home run in the second inning. In the third inning, a single brought in two more runs to give Wagner a lead it wouldn't relinquish. He finished the game 3-3 with three RBIs, two runs and one walk.
That lead was kept safe in large part due to freshman Ryan Bilka's performance on the mound.
After taking over for sophomore Daniel Merkel, Bilka retired the first seven batters he faced. He finished his 4.1 innings of work having allowed only three hits and inducing eight ground balls in the win.
Bilka ran into trouble in the seventh inning before ceding mound duties to junior Nicholas Hanson. But a double play ignited by senior Maimu Kobayashi's arm from center field left the Seahawks unscathed.
Hanson allowed one baserunner through the final 2.2 innings of play, striking out two batters in the ninth inning.
To go along with the stellar pitching, Wagner's offense was productive. Prior to Melfi's two-RBI single, senior Cody Bey hit a double down the right field line to score Kobayashi.
Then in the sixth inning, the Seahawks tacked on two more runs to go up 6-3. A fielding error by Radford's Tristan Shoemaker allowed Melfi to cross the plate. The next at-bat saw Kobayashi bring home junior Ariv Camacho on a double to left center.
The Green & White got one more insurance run on a sacrifice fly from Kobayashi.
Melfi, Bey, Kobayashi and junior Chris Conniff all had multi-hit efforts in the win.
In game two, it was a pitchers duel through the first third of the game.
Through three innings reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Pitcher of the Week junior Julian Taudin-Chabot allowed no hits and struck out two batters, yielding four walks, while Dylan Howard hurled two strikeouts and allowed one hit for Radford.
But the doors were blown off its hinges in the next inning. Senior DiMaggio Cazares cleared the bases in the fourth inning to make it a 3-0 ball game. Two batters later Camacho padded the lead with a single up the middle.
Radford responded by hanging two runs on Taudin-Chabot, forcing sophomore Connor Hayden into the game.
But the Seahawks bounced back, bringing home two more runs in the fifth inning.
Melfi continued his stellar day with another RBI, driving in Bey on a double to right field. Sophomore Matthew Kenney followed that up with an RBI single, pushing his season batting average to .800.
Hayden finished his 3.1 innings of work having thrown six strikeouts and allowing one hit.
The runs kept on coming in the ninth inning as three HBPs in a row brought the Seahawks home. Conniff then produced two more runs of his own with one swing of the bat as his double made it an 11-2 game.
Senior Ruben Del Castillo closed out the evening with two no-hit innings.
Up next for Wagner is the final game of its series against Radford, which will be played on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
