Staten Island - The Wagner College women's tennis team played its first home match of the spring schedule on Sunday, hosting new NEC conference rival Stonehill College. Playing on the indoor courts at the College of Staten Island. 

The Seahawks got singles wins from juniors Tara Dakic and Gabrielle Perraudin, as well as freshman Samantha Bentsianov and sophomore Paula Ysabelle Uy to defeat the visiting Skyhawks.

Stonehill took the doubles point, combining a 6-0 opener at #3 with a 6-2 clinch at #2. The #1 doubles match was 5-2 in favor of Wagner at the time of doubles clinch and left unfinished. 

Wagner followed by winning the top 4 singles matches to earn the overall match win. Tara Dakic posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 singles against Stonehill senior Cristina Solorzano Valencia. Perraudin battled to a 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 win at #2 over Steffi Antao. Bentsianov edged freshman Anneliese Beltran 7-5, 6-4 at #3.

Wagner freshman Emma Lofstedt fell to Stonehill's Marissa Such, 6-1, 6-1 at #6 singles, bringing the Skyhawks back within a point at 3-2.

Paula Ysabelle Uy clinched the match for Wagner with a thrilling 6-4, 4-6, 17-15 triumph over Stonehill senior Lily Peter at #4 singles. Uy, mobbed by her teammates, raised a fist in triumph.

The win for Wagner was the first in NEC play since October 2021, a 4-1 win at St. Francis Brooklyn. It was also the first dual match coaching win for new head coach Lena Babunski.

Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Clinton, NJ for a dual against the Lafayette Leopards at the Courtside Racquet Club on February 25th, at 4:00 pm.
