Raleigh, NC - The Wagner College baseball team began its 2023 season with a 14-1 loss to N.C. State.
Senior Dante Faicchio collected two hits for Wagner in the first and third inning. Senior Maimu Kobayashi and sophomore Matthew Kenney added to the hit total.
After the Wolfpack got on the board in the first inning, Wagner's response in the next half inning was denied. Senior Cody Bey and redshirt junior Xavier Ulrich reached on singles, but junior Ariv Camacho grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Junior transfer Chris Conniff drove in the first run of the season on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning. Kenney and Camacho reached base to start off the inning. Then, a fielder's choice from Kobayashi advanced Kenney to third before Conniff's soft roller to first produced the run.
On the mound, after sophomore Daniel Merkel hurled four innings, freshman Jason Masick made his Wagner debut as the first pitcher out of the bullpen. The Houston native gave up six runs in three innings of action.
Senior Jagger Duquette pitched the rest of the way, allowing two runs across an inning of work.
For the Wolfpack, Logan Whitaker threw seven scoreless innings in the win.
Wagner will look to regroup for game two of three against N.C. State set for Saturday at 2:00 pm.
