New Britain, CT – The Wagner College men's basketball team will take the road for the penultimate time this regular season, as the Seahawks take on Central Connecticut on Thursday night at 7:00 pm on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Seahawks earned a 58-46 win over LIU on Saturday. As part of the game, Wagner celebrated the 20
th anniversary of the 2002-2003 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship team, with Jermaine Hall receiving his NEC Hall of Fame plaque from commissioner Noreen Morris.
Leading 35-17 at the half, Wagner extended its lead to as much as 23 points, as a balanced Wagner attack was led by 12 points apiece from junior
Rahmir Moore and freshman
Keyontae Lewis.
The Season Series
In the first meeting between the two teams, sophomore
Rob Taylor II scored a game-high 17 points, as the Seahawks earned a wire-to-wire 72-50 victory over the Blue Devils.
The Seahawks led for 37:52 minutes and held the Blue Devils to 1-16 (6.3%) from long range and 16-46 (34.8%) shooting from the field throughout the contest while outscoring CCSU 44-24 in the paint.
Lewis Earns Rookie Of The Week Honors
Freshman
Keyontae Lewis was named the NEC Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday. The 6-9 freshman was tied for the team lead with 12 points in Wagner's 58-46 victory over LIU on Saturday. Two days earlier, Lewis added six points at St. Francis Brooklyn. Additionally, Lewis grabbed seven rebounds apiece in both games while finishing the week shooting 8-14 (.571) from the field.
Among conference freshmen, Lewis ranks second with 4.0 rebounds per contest and he's also seventh overall in blocks (0.9).
Dominating The Glass
With 12.74 offensive rebounds per game, Wagner is currently 19
th nationally. Wagner also leads the NEC with a rebounding margin of 4.6, good for 44
th in the nation. The Seahawks pace the NEC with 35.96 rebounds per game.
Brandon Brown Continues To Impress
Against St. Francis Brooklyn,
Brandon Brown led three Seahawks in double figures with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.
Brown leads the NEC with 9.0 rebounds per game, good for 41
st in the country.
Wagner DNA On Display
The Seahawks rank 23
rd in the nation in scoring defense at 62.3 points per game. Wagner also leads the NEC in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 42.8% from the field throughout the season.
Julian Brown Provides A Spark
Freshman
Julian Brown has provided a spark off the bench in Wagner's last three games. Brown is averaging 9.3 points per game on 64.7 percent shooting overall and a 66.7 percent mark from outside the arc during the last three games. He finished 3-5 from distance and scored nine points in the Green and White's win over LIU on Saturday.
Scouting The Blue Devils
CCSU is coming into Thursday's matchup having won two straight games over Fairleigh Dickinson and Hartford. The Blue Devils are 8-19 overall and 5-7 in NEC action.
Hunt's Spectacular Shot
After a wild rally that saw Wagner erase a 19-point deficit with under 12 minutes remaining and nine-point hole with under three minutes to play, junior guard
DeLonnie Hunt completed the comeback by sinking a 35-foot runner at the buzzer to send the game into overtime at St. Francis Brooklyn last Thursday.
The play was named number four on ESPN's SportsCenter Top10.
