Zaire Williams' career-high 21 points and two late defensive stands propelled the Seahawks to a 62-59 victory at Coppin State on Wednesday night.
The Seahawks only led for 6:18 minutes of the contest, including just over three minutes in the second half, but made big plays when it counted most.
Historic Anniversary
Wagner will celebrate the 60
th anniversary of its victory over NYU on Sunday. In 1963, the Seahawks earned a 77-76 victory over seventh-ranked NYU on December 17. Wagner will host a pregame reception along with a halftime recognition at the Spiro Sports Center around Sunday's game.
Williams Finds His Groove
Zaire Williams has found his rhythm – the junior has scored in double figures in three straight games and has made a three in six straight games, including a season-high four threes against Coppin State, which tied his career-high. Williams' career-high 21 points and seven field goals against the Eagles came on the heels of an 11-point second half in Wagner's win over Stony Brook.
Lewis Notches First Double-Double
With 11 points and 11 rebounds against Coppin State, sophomore
Keyontae Lewis recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career. Coming into the game at 1-3 from the free throw line on the season, Lewis picked up seven points from the charity stripe against the Eagles. On the defensive end, Lewis was the key player in Wagner's final defensive stand in Wednesday's victory.
Howell-South Making Noise
Redshirt Sophomore
Di'Andre Howell-South scored a season-high 10 points in Wagner's win over Coppin State and has made two or more field goals in four of Wagner's last five games. Howell-South has not recorded a turnover in 124:35 minutes of play this season.
Council Continues To Impress
Junior
Melvin Council Jr. scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game on Wednesday night. The first-year Seahawk has made at least six field goals in three straight games and logged a career-high four steals against the Eagles. A Northeast Conference (NEC) Prime Performer last week, Council is Wagner's leading scorer at 13.6 points per game.

The Seahawks have won three of their last four games, including two straight road wins. In the three victories, Wagner held its opponents to a combined 39.5% from the field along with a +5 turnover margin.
