Williams' Big Week
Junior
Zaire Williams was named a Northeast Conference (NEC) Prime Performer after big performances against Coppin State and Boston University last week. In last Wednesday's victory over Coppin State, Williams scored a career-high 21 points, followed by 15 points against Boston University. The junior has scored in double figures in four straight games and has made a three in seven straight games, including a season-high four threes against Coppin State, which tied his career-high. Williams' career-high 21 points and seven field goals against the Eagles came on the heels of an 11-point second half in Wagner's win over Stony Brook.
Taking Care Of The Basketball
The Seahawks continue to be one of the best teams in the country in regards to turning the ball over. At 9.2 turnovers per game, Wagner ranks 11
th in the country and leads the NEC.
Wagner Brand On Display
The Wagner brand of defensive and toughness is represented well in the national rankings. Wagner leads the NEC and is 49
th in the country in scoring defense at 65 points per game. The Green and White comes into the week 83
rd in the nation and first in the league in offensive rebounds with 12.33 per game. The Seahawks also pace the league in three-point field goal percentage defense at 29.9%, good for 63
rd nationally.
The Series
Sunday's game marks the 12
th all-time meeting between the two teams, with Fairfield holding a slim 6-5 advantage in the head-to-head series between the two teams. Wagner has won five of the last seven meetings, dating back to 2015. Last year, three Seahawks scored in double figures and the Wagner defense held Fairfield to 30.6% shooting from the field as the Seahawks earned a convincing 68-52 victory at the Spiro Sports Center. The last time the two teams met in Connecticut in 2021, Wagner earned a tough 63-50 victory over Fairfield to close out its non-conference schedule.
Lewis Notches First Double-Double
With 11 points and 11 rebounds against Coppin State, sophomore
Keyontae Lewis recorded the first double-double of his collegiate career. Coming into the game at 1-3 from the free throw line on the season, Lewis picked up seven points from the charity stripe against the Eagles. On the defensive end, Lewis was the key player in Wagner's final defensive stand in Wednesday's victory.
Historic Anniversary
Wagner celebrated the 60
th anniversary of its victory over NYU on Sunday. In 1963, the Seahawks earned a 77-76 victory over seventh-ranked NYU on December 17. Wagner hosted a pregame reception along with a halftime recognition at the Spiro Sports Center around Sunday's game.
Scouting The Stags
Fairfield enters Sunday's contest with a 4-6 overall record. No stranger to the NEC, the Stags most recently earned a 67-57 win over Sacred Heart and have won three straight games overall coming into Sunday's game.
