Men’s Basketball Continues Three-Game Road Trip At Stony Brook On Saturday

The Wagner College men's basketball team will continue its three-game road trip on Saturday, as the Seahawks open the month of December at Stony Brook, with tip-off set for 3:30 pm on SNY.
 
The Road Ahead
 
Wagner will wrap up non-conference play with six games in December, four of which will be on the road. Aside from Stony Brook, the Seahawks will travel to Coppin State, Fairfield, and Manhattan. At home, Wagner will take on Boston University and Gwynedd Mercy.
 
Council Continues To Impress
 
Junior Melvin Council Jr. once again led the Seahawks with 17 points against Providence. This marked the second straight game with 17 points or more for the first-year Seahawk, who earned NEC Prime Performer honors after scoring 18 points in Wagner's win over NJIT. Council has made three three-pointers in two straight games while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds against the Friars.
 
Getting To The Line
 
Wagner attempted a season-high 26 free throws against NJIT. Wagner is 2-0 this season when attempting 20 or more free throws in a game.
 
Starting To Heat Up From Deep
 
The Seahawks are connecting on 7.5 three-pointers per contest this season. Wagner already has two games with 10 threes against Division I opposition this season after only having one a year ago.
 
Coming into the week, Wagner, ranked 21st nationally in percentage of points scored on triples, compared to 209th last season.
 
Ezquerra Stuffs The Stat Sheet
 
Junior Javier Ezquerra recorded nine steals against NJIT and Seton Hall along with 13 assists in his last four games. Against NJIT, Ezquerra was second on the team with 12 points, his second double-digit performance of the season. Against Providence, Ezquerra added a season-high seven rebounds.
 
The Series
 
Saturday's matchup marks the 11th meeting between Wagner and Stony Brook, with the Seahawks holding a 7-3 advantage in the series. 
 
Last year, Wagner trailed 32-28 at the half before earning a tough 58-55 victory.  Javier Ezquerra and Zaire Williams led the Seahawks with 13 points apiece, while Rob Taylor II scored a career-high 11 points, all of which came in the first half.

The last time the two teams met on Long Island two seasons ago, the Seahawks started the second half with a 22-2 run on their way to a dominant 78-49 victory. The Seahawks held a 43-27 advantage on the glass, 20-10 edge in assists, and outscored Stony Brook 42-18 in the paint. On the defensive end, Wagner held the America East preseason favorite to 30.9% (17-55) shooting throughout the contest.
 
Scouting The Seawolves
 
Stony Brook enters Saturday's game with a 2-4 record, most recently falling 79-71 at Yale. The Seawolves are 2-0 at home this season, earning victories over St. Joseph's Long Island and Rider.
