Brookville, NY - The Wagner College women's and men's participated in the 2023 Northeast Conference (NEC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 28. The men ran an 8k course, with the women competing after them with their own 5k race.
The women's team would finish in fifth out of nine schools, with a team score of 110. The men would place fourth overall, finishing the day with a team score of 80.
Sophomore Laura Trenado and junior Gia Comerford would earn themselves spots on the All-Conference Team for their performance at the title race. Trenado placed in fifth while Comerford trailed closely in 14th, out of the 81 runners. Trenado navigated the course in 18:49.1, for an average mile pace of 6:03. Comerford's finishing time was 19:26.5, for an average mile pace of 6:15.
Seniors Elizabeth Szambel and Ana Blanco Duran were next to finish for the Seahawks. Szambel and Duran placed 27th and 28th, respectively, with times of 20:07.2 and 20:12.5.
Junior Lara Jacobs rounded out the scoring for Wagner. Jacobs placed in 36th with a total time of 20:40.3.
Freshman Victoria Dziubela, freshman Magui Calvo, sophomore Peyton Miller, sophomore Angela Cavalieri, and sophomore Angelina Olah also competed for Wagner. Dziubela placed 40th with a time of 20:47.2. Calvo placed 45th with a time of 20:52.6. Miller would finish in 55th, Cavalieri in 61st, and Olah in 70th.
On the men's side, the Seahawks were led by graduate student Dominic Palermo. Out of 83 runners, Palermo received his second-straight third place finish at the NEC Championships, and his fourth top-10 finish of his career. The Staten Island native ran the 8k course in 25:29.8, for an average mile pace of 5:08.
Junior Anthony Bentivegna would also earn himself a top-15 finish. Bentivegna placed eleventh with a total time of 24:45.1. Junior Johnny Sokoll, junior Michael Ryan, and junior Justin Morris rounded out the scoring for the Seahawks. Sokoll found himself with a 16th place finish with a time of 26:18.2, Ryan finished 24th clocking in a time of 26:55.3, and Morris placed 29th overall with a time of 27:19.5.
Seniors Paul Siconolfi and Michael Brannick also participated for the Green & White, finishing in 36th and 41st, respectively.
