Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team defended home field on Sunday afternoon's Senior Day celebration, defeating Sacred Heart for the squad's sixth shutout victory of the season.
Junior Sam Hughes made four saves in the 1-0 win over the Pioneers, marking her sixth clean sheet of the season. All six shutouts by Hughes have resulted in wins, putting her record at 6-4-2 on the year.
Hughes's bid for a shutout victory was given a big boost in the 34th minute as junior Olivia Rubbo fired a perfectly placed right-footed shot into the top right corner of the goal. It was the first goal of the season for the Holbrook, NY native.
From there, the Seahawks defense buckled down, allowing just five total shots to the Pioneers. Junior Kylie McNally and senior Kayla Barbosa played all 90 minutes in a sensational effort.
Sitting at 15 points on the Northeast Conference (NEC) leaderboard, the Seahawks will need either a win or draw on Thursday, October 19 versus Fairleigh Dickinson to clinch. Kickoff for Wagner's final home regular season contest is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
