Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 To Iona On Sunday

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team fell to Iona, 1-0, at Hameline Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels opened the scoring nine minutes into the contest as graduate student Faith Preziosi found the back of the net off a pass from Kate McNally.

Despite falling behind early, the Seahawks kept the pressure on the Gaels as they out shot the Gaels 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Hughes kept Iona in check through the rest of the first half with three saves.

In the second half, the Green & White kept up the pressure on Iona with six shots in the final 45 minutes. Along with the six shots, Wagner forced three corner kick opportunities but were unable to convert with multiple corner kick chances in the late stages of the contest.

Iona held on to claim a 1-0 victory despite several chances from Wagner in the second half. The loss snaps Wagner's two-game winning streak.

Sam Hughes stopped eight shots in the contest while senior Julianna Rafaniello led Wagner with four shots and two on goal. Sophomore Claire Janis joined Rafaniello with two shots on goal to lead Wagner.

The Seahawks will begin a three-game road trip on Thursday, September 8 when they travel to West Point, NY to take on Army at 7:00 P.M.
