Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls To UMBC, 2-1, On Thursday Evening

Baltimore, MD - The Wagner women's soccer team fell to the UMBC Retrievers, 2-1, on Thursday evening. Sophomore forward Claire Janis netted her first collegiate goal for the Seahawks off a well-timed feed from classmate Jocelyn Billingsly for her first assist in a Wagner uniform.

Both teams were at a stalemate after the first 45 minutes of action, with UMBC holding a 3-1 edge on shot attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Hughes registered the lone save in the stanza.

Four minutes into the second half, the Retrievers broke the scoreless tie as Lola Negrete was able to find the back of the net, giving UMBC a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks nearly tied the match at 1-1 when Emma Roe sent a low, driving shot to the bottom left of the goal, but was turned aside by Morgan McGruder.

UMBC upped its advantage by two on Meghan McKye's second goal of the season in the 70th minute.

Janis cut the deficit in half in the 86th minutes as she was able to head the ball to the low right of the goal after Billingsly was able to set her up for the goal.

The Seahawks will close out their first road trip of the season on Saturday evening as Wagner travels to Manhattan. Kickoff from Gaelic Park is set for 7:00 p.m.
