Women's Soccer Nets First Win Of The Season; Defeats Manhattan 1-0 On Saturday Evening

Riverdale, NY - Senior midfielder Juliana Rafaniello scored her first goal in a Wagner uniform in the 68th minute as the Seahawks defeated Manhattan, 1-0, on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park.

Fifth-year Gabby Cipriano lined up for the corner kick in the 68th minute. The Mississauga, Ontario native sent the ball high into the air as senior Isabella Manzella was able to head the ball into the box.

Rafaniello was able to control the ball and push one past Manhattan's Kim Mains, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Cipriano and Manzella were each credited with their first assist of the season.

For their career, it marked the fourth helper in Cipriano's tenure with the team and third for Manzella.

Both teams entered the break tied at nil-nil with the Jaspers testing Seahawk goalkeeper, Erin Kelly, early in the frame, as the Massapequa, NY native made three stops in the opening stanza on nine shots faced.

Manhattan nearly found the tying score three minutes into the second as Olivia Martuscello booted a chance to the bottom right of the goal, but Kelly was there to deny the chance.

The Jaspers had a final chance with five minutes remaining in the contest as Martuscello once again created a scoring opportunity, but Kelly was up to the task in stopping the chance and preserving the win.

For Kelly, she finished with five saves en route to her fourth career shutout. Her counterpart, Mains, was credited with two saves on seven shots faced.

The Seahawks close out the first month of the season on Wednesday, August 31 as they welcome the NJIT Highlanders to Hameline Field.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. as Joey Jarzynka will have the call on NEC Front Row.
