Fairfield, CT – The Wagner College softball team picked up a 10-4 victory over Sacred Heart to win the three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Wagner improves to 11-7 in NEC play, while the Pioneers fall to 5-13 in league action.
In the circle, sophomore
Scarlett Lloyd earned the complete game victory, striking out five batters in the process. With her performance, Lloyd surpassed 100 strikeouts for her career as well as this season and now sits second all-time in program history for strikeouts in a single season with 105. Lloyd only trails Krystle Petty, who struck out 113 batters in 2001.
The Seahawks took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by
Bianca Worthy in the first inning. After the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, a two-run double by senior
Mackenzie Vogler put the Green and White back in front in the third inning.
A sacrifice fly by Worthy extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. After the Pioneers cut into the deficit with a run in their half of the fourth, the Seahawks added two more runs in the fifth on RBIs by senior
Natalie Del Ponte and Lloyd.
The Seahawks put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning, which included RBIs by senior
Penelope Russ and sophomore
Keaghan Ward. The Pioneers added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks earned the win.
Wagner held a 13-10 advantage in hits, as Conway and Russ had three hits apiece.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Lafayette on Wednesday, with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
