Santa Barbara, CA – The Wagner College softball team took an early 2-0 lead and scored a season-high seven runs, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks fell 9-7 to Santa Clara in the final game of the Seahawks' California road stint.
Wagner's offense got off to a great start, as consecutive RBI doubles by sophomore
Scarlett Lloyd and freshman
Kate Wolf gave the Seahawks an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
Santa Clara cut the deficit in half in the second inning, before taking a 4-2 lead in the fourth and extending the lead to 7-2 in the fifth.
Wagner rallied in the bottom half of the fifth inning, as a two-run double by senior
Mackenzie Vogler and Lloyd's second RBI of the day made it 7-5.
Santa Clara added two runs in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-5. In the bottom of the seventh, the Seahawks scored two more runs on Lloyd's third and fourth RBI of the day, but it wasn't enough, as Santa Clara ended the game on a double play.
Lloyd suffered the loss in the circle in relief of senior
Eve Harvey, with senior
Kayla Hooks also seeing action in the defeat.
As a team, Wagner combined for nine hits, as Lloyd led the way with three hits and 4 RBIs.
Wagner returns to the action on Wednesday, when the Seahawks will travel to Fordham for a single game, with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
