Women's Tennis Earns 5-2 Home Win Against Monmouth

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's tennis team earned a 5-2 home victory over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon from the CSI Tennis Courts.

With the victory, the Seahawks move to 3-4 on the season while the Hawks falter to 3-7 on the year.

"I am proud of the way our team performed this afternoon," commented head coach Scott Paz. "We were able to make adjustments when needed and never get down about dropping a point. Our team is focused and determined and we will carry this momentum to our next match."

Wagner secured the doubles point for the 1-0 lead in the overall match. Monmouth earned a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles play before the tandem of Tara Dakic and Gabrielle Perraudin was able to outlast Nicole Gasser and Lenien Jamir, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles, in tying the match at 1-1.

In the deciding match of doubles action, the pairing of Samantha Lugtu and Fidan Khalilzade withstood a late rally from Ann Spruka and Madison Mills, 6-4, as the Seahawks went up 1-0 in the overall match.

The Seahawks put the match away by claiming four of the six singles matches. Perraudin was able to outlast Gasser, 2-6; 6-1; 10-4 at No. 1.

Dakic earned a 7-6 (5); 6-3 victory over Zoe Klapman at No. 2 play. Khalilzade earned her 24th career singles victory after defeating Spurka, 6-3; 6-4 at No. 3.

Lastly, Lugtu was able to post a 6-3; 6-1 win over Mills at No. 4 as the Seahawks earned their third win of the season.

The Seahawks are back in action on March 12 as Northeast Conference (NEC) play resumes with Wagner hosting the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers.
