Men's Golf Defeats Canisius 3.5-1.5 In Match Play Event To Open Spring Season

The Wagner men's golf team won its spring-opening match play event against Canisius, 3.5-1.5 on Wednesday at The Legends at Orange Lake Resort.

 
 
The two teams took part in a five-player match play event, with the yardage at 7,002. Wednesday's victory was head coach Jimmy Criscione's first career win.

 
 
"I am extremely proud of all the boys today who gutted it out all the way through the end," Criscione said. "It was a total team effort today and a great way to start the spring season."

Second Match: Joshua Hayes vs Michael Wells: Hayes loses 3&2
Third Match: Luke Bigelow vs. Ryan Edholm: Halved
Fourth Match: Michael Foley vs. Shane Broad: Foley wins 1 up
Fifth Match: Tyler Galantini vs. Mike Donner: Galantini wins 1 up
 
The first match between Matt Schurin and Ben Rarmold of Canisius resulted in the event's first win, 5&4, to earn one point for Wagner. Josh Hayes and Michael Wells was the second match, with Hayes losing 3&2, to even the score at 1-1.
 
The third match between Luke Bigelow and Ryan Edholm went back and forth. Bigelow was one down going into the 18th hole and chipped in at the end to halve the match. He earned a half point for Wagner, keeping the score tied at 1.5-1.5.
 
Michael Foley and Shane Broad teed off in the fourth match. Foley made a 30-foot birdie putt on hole 16 to go one up in the match. He tied 17 and hit a 7 iron from 180 yards out on hole 18 to within four feet of the pin. Foley made par and finished 1 up to secure another team point, giving the Seahawks a 2.5-1.5 advantage.
 
Tyler Galantini and Mike Donner faced off in the fifth match of the day. Galantini was leading most of the way, but Donner tied it late in the match. Going into the 18th hole it was a tie. From 129 yards out into the wind, Galantini played it 135 yards off a pitching wedge shot and hit it four feet from the pin. He made the birdie putt for the win to secure the final point for Wagner on the day and make it a final of 3.5-1.5.
 
The Seahawks are back in action this weekend for The Battle at Rum Pointe, hosted by Iona in Berlin, MD.
