Women's Basketball Holds Off Late CCSU Comeback For 65-58 Road Win

Four score in double-figures, led by EKG's double-double (17pts/12 rebounds)

New Britain, CT -  Four Seahawks scored in double-figures, led by a double-double performance by Emilija Krista Grava as Wagner completed the season sweep of Central Connecticut, defeating the Blue Devils 65-58 on Saturday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium. 

Krista Grava led all scorers with a game-high 17 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field while finishing with a team-leading 12 rebounds over 35 minutes of action. Zhaneia Thybulle netted 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor while adding five rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Kem Nwabudu chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds in reserve while Alex Cowan reached double-figures with ten points. 

Three Blue Devils also reached double-figures, paced by Belle Lanpher, who concluded the afternoon with 12 points on 5 of 13 shooting. Forever Toppin chipped in 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting while recording four steals. Amaya Williams tallied 10 points in 18 minutes of play. 

"I am proud of our group for staying resilient and bouncing back from our last game," commented first-year head coach Terrell Coburn. "We got off to a great start today and sustained the lead. Credit Central Connecticut as they fought to the end, but, I am extremely proud of our team how they were able to finish." 
 
Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • The 41 posted by the Seahawks over the first half of play is a season-high and marks just the second time this season they have eclipsed the 40 point mark in the opening half, surpassing the previous total of 40, set back on January 27 at Saint Francis U. 
  • Of Wagner's 65 points, 38 of those came from inside-the-paint. 
  • The Seahawks capitalized off the fast break, netting 17 points to CCSU's seven. 
  • The Blue Devils did hold a 42-41 edge on the boards, but the Seahawks outmuscled CCSU, 26-21 on the defensive glass.
  • Wagner went to the line a season-high 33 times while hitting 16 of those attempts. 
    • Central Connecticut went 8 of 11 from the line. 
  • The Blue Devils netted 20 points off second chances and their reserves outscored Wagner's bench, 30-15. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Central got on the board first with a three by Eden Nibbelink. From that point, the Seahawks responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a Thybulle layup off the fastbreak. 
  • The Green & White held the Blue Devils to just two made field goals over the rest of the frame, as the visitors claimed an eight-point lead, 17-9, after the first ten minutes of play. 
 
Second Quarter…
  • Wagner carried that momentum over to the second quarter of play, as Krista Grava was able to find the hoop in the paint to kick off the scoring. 
  • Ashley Berube netted a three-pointer from Sutherland-Case that closed the gap to seven, 19-12, a minute into the quarter. 
  • The Green & White stagged an 18-0 run that saw the lead increase to 23, as Drayah Heyward was able to find a cutting Krista Grava that made it 35-12 in favor of the Seahawks before Lanpher was able to hit on two straight baskets that halted the Seahawks' run. 
  • EKG was able to muscle her way in for two before Thybulle hit on a jumper that pushed the lead up to 41-16, which is how both teams entered the break. 
    • The Seahawks went 11 of 17 in the quarter while holding the Blue Devils to just 3 of 15. 
 
Third Quarter…
  • Wagner notched its largest lead of the contest, 43-16, as Thybulle was able to create space and hit a jumper. 
  • CCSU began to chip into the Wagner lead with a 6-0 run, as Toppin was able to hit on the layup in the paint before EKG again answered back with a jumper of her own. 
  • The Blue Devils outscored Wagner, 12-11, over the remainder of the quarter, but the Seahawks still held a 20-point advantage, 54-34. 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • Williams sparked the Blue Devils' offense in the early portion of the fourth, scoring the team's first five points and seven of nine, which trimmed the deficit to 56-43 with 5:57 left to play. 
  • Following a timeout by Coach Coburn, Thybulle was able to hit in the paint that brought Wagner's lead back up to 15. 
  • Central Connecticut mounted a 7-0 run that brought further trimmed the deficit down to eight, 58-50, as Toppin was able to hit from the line with 65 seconds left to play. 
  • Lina Loceniece was able to hit on one of two from the line with just 52 seconds remaining. 
  • CCSU called for time and when play resumed, Lanpher was able to spot up a three off the feed from Toppin, forcing the Seahawks to call for time, up 59-53. 
  • Cowan was fouled and made the backend of the two-shot foul, as Wagner took a 60-53 lead with just 42 seconds. 
  • When play resumed, Toppin hit on a jumper and the Blue Devils immediately fouled Cowan, who was able to hit both from the line.
  • On the Blue Devils' next possession, Williams continued her torrid shooting, hitting a triple with 27 seconds. 
  • Wagner was able to put the game away as Cowan, Katrice Jackson and Thybulle each hit 1 of 2 from the line as the Seahawks held on for the seven-point win, their 14th of the season. 
 
Next Up For Wagner…
  • Wagner will return home to the Spiro Sports Center for the final two home games of the regular season as they will welcome the first-place FDU on Thursday, February 24 before welcoming Bryant on Saturday, February 26 for Senior Day.
