Men's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener At Fairfield

Fairfield, CT- The Wagner men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener on Saturday at Fairfield, 16-9.
 
The Seahawks saw six players find the back of the net in the loss. Stephen Dwyer, Aidan Clark, and Ethan Sieb allied tallied two goals each. Others getting their name on the goal sheet included Tyler Lawton, Danny Cassidy, and Daniel Mercado.
 
Inside The Boxscore
 
  • Wagner outshot Fairfield, 42-34. However, the Stags held a 26-17 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Seahawks goalkeeper Danny Brady made seven saves on the afternoon, while Fairfield's Colin Consoli made eight stops in goal.  
  • Fairfield won 18 faceoffs compared to Wagner's 11.
  • The Stags had 43 groundballs and the Green & White collected 29.
  • The Seahawks collected four assists to the Stags' seven helpers.
 
First Quarter
 
  • Fairfield jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening period.
  • Wagner rallied late in the 1st with goals from Dwyer and Clark. 
 
  • Clark's second career goal came on an extra-man opportunity to make it 6-2 heading into the next 15 minutes of action.
   
Second Quarter
 
  • The Stags' Taylor Strough scored less than a minute in to the second period.
  • Lawton answered right away with a goal to keep it at 7-3.
  • Sieb followed up with a goal with 9:45 remaining in the half, bringing Wagner to its shortest deficit on the afternoon, 7-4.
 
  • Fairfield went on to take a 10-4 lead into the half.
 
Third Quarter
 
  • Fairfield came out in the second half on fire, scoring four straight before a goal from Cassidy to make it 14-5.
  • Then came Clark's second goal of the day with under a minute left in the 3rd.
  • Wagner trailed 14-6 before the final 15 minutes of play.
  • Nate Yi went in goal with 4:28 remaining in place of Brady for the final 20 minutes of action.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
  • Fairfield tacked on two quick goals before Wagner answered with three in a row in the final frame from Dwyer, Mercado, and Sieb.
 
 
Wagner's three-game road trip to start 2022 continues next Saturday when the Seahawks are set to face Manhattan at 12:00 p.m.
