Women's Basketball Falls At Home To Sacred Heart, 60-50

Kem Nwabudu registered her second double-double of the season

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team led by as many as 12 points early on but Sacred Heart outscored the Seahawks 21-6 in the second quarter to hold off the Green & White, 60-50, on Thursday evening at the Spiro Sports Center. 
 
Wagner (13-10; 7-7 NEC) had two players score in double-figures, led by Alex Cowan, who netted a team-high 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting from the field. Kem Nwabudu registered her second double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. 
 
Sacred Heart (6-13; 5-9 NEC) had three players reach double-digits, led by Sonia Smith, who poured in a game-high 22 points, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter. 
 
Carly Stroemel added 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting while Nikki Johnson nearly posted a double-double, finishing with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds in 32 minutes of action.

Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • The Seahawks outmuscled the Pioneers on the boards,48-32, which included a 26-4 edge on the offensive glass. 
  • Wagner netted 14 points off second-chance opportunities. 
  • After converting on 44.4 percent from the field in the first quarter, the Seahawks were limited to just three made baskets in the second quarter while the visitors hit on 70.0 from the floor (7 of 10). 
  • Sacred Heart turned Wagner's 20 turnovers into 20 points. 
  • The Pioneers scored 24 of their 60 points from inside-the-paint. 
  • The game featured only three lead changes and two ties.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Wagner opened up the game on a 9-3 run, capped off by a Drayah Heyward layup. 
  • Back-to-back buckets from Stroemel and Maiya Bergdork cut into the Seahawks lead before Wagner erupted on a 10-0 run over the next 1:40 in building their largest lead of the contest, 19-7, following a basket by Emilija Krista Grava

 
  • Niki Johnson ended the run with a layup for the final points of the frame as the Seahawks held a 10-point edge, 19-9. 
 
  
Second Quarter…
  • Johnson hit on a layup for the first points of the second quarter before Thybulle was able to hit the pull-up jumper, extending the Wagner lead to 21-13.

 
  • The Pioneers concluded the quarter outscoring the Seahawks, 19-4, in taking a 30-25 lead into the halftime break. 
  • Wagner struggled down the stretch of the quarter, converting just 2 of 14 from the field while the visitors hit on 6 of 8 from the field and the free-throw line. Smith and Stroemel combined to score 14 of the 19 points during the run. 
 
Third Quarter…
  • Cowan answered a Stroemel jumper with a three-pointer off the feed from Thybulle that brought Wagner to within four, 32-28, in the early moments of the quarter. 
  • Sacred Heart embarked on a 9-2 spurt over the next five minutes in building an 11-point lead as Smith was able to connect on the mid-range jumper
  • Nwabudu put an end to the run, as she was able to muscle her way in for two that made it 41-32, with 2:15 left to go in the frame. 
  • Wagner scored four of the final six points, as once again Nwabudu was at the forefront of it, adding a layup with just 12 seconds showing as the Seahawks managed to trim the deficit down to seven, 43-36, heading into the final quarter.
 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • Wagner continued to climb back in the contest, as Nwabudu was able to hit on the baseline jumper off the feed from Cowan, as the Green & White were within five, 43-38. 
  • A 13-2 run orchestrated by the Pioneers over a 4:40 span helped give the visitors their largest lead of the game, 56-40, as Smith was able to bury the corner three-pointer. 
  • The Seahawks continued to be resilient, ending the game on a 10-4 run, capped by a Cowan three-pointer at the buzzer but it was not enough to overtake the Pioneers. 
 
Next Up For Wagner…
  • The Seahawks close out the week with a trip to New Britain, CT, as they will take on the Central Connecticut Blue Devils at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
