Men’s Basketball Hosts Merrimack On New Year’s Eve

The Wagner College men's basketball team will play host to Merrimack in the Seahawks' Northeast Conference (NEC) home opener on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 pm at the Spiro Sports Center.

Six players scored eight points or more as the Seahawks opened Northeast Conference (NEC) play with a 69-61 victory over LIU at the Barclays Center on Thursday afternoon.
 
Home Sweet Home
 
Wagner is 4-0 at the Spiro Sports Center on the season. Dating back to the 2020-21 season, Wagner has won 23 of its last 27 games at home.
 
Ezquerra's Development
 
Sophomore Javier Ezquerra led the Seahawks with 13 points against LIU. In Wagner's win over Gwynedd Mercy, Ezquerra flirted with a triple-double, compiling 12 points, along with career-highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (nine).
 
On the season, Ezquerra is converting on 40.7% (22-54) attempts from long range, more than doubling his three-point field goal percentage compared to last year's 18.2%.

Wagner came into conference play as the only team with a winning record in the NEC finishing the non-conference slate with a 7-4 record that included impressive victories over Temple, Fairfield, Stony Brook and NJIT.

Brandon Brown Continues To Impress
 
Against LIU, Brandon Brown notched his league-leading fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds while leading the NEC at 8.6 rebounds per game.
 
No Seahawk has averaged more rebounds per contest since former All-NEC selection Michael Carey, who averaged 9.1 boards per game in 2016-17.

Wagner leads the series against the Warriors 3-2 after splitting the season series last year.
 
The Warriors ended Wagner's historic 14-game win streak with an 80-65 overtime victory at the Spiro Sports Center in the last meeting between the two teams.
