Staten Island, NY – Trailing 32-28 at the half, the Wagner College men's basketball team earned a tough 58-55 victory over Stony Brook at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday night.
With the win, Wagner improves to 5-4 on the season, while the Seawolves fall to 3-8.
Sophomores
Javier Ezquerra and
Zaire Williams led the Seahawks with 13 points apiece, while sophomore
Rob Taylor II scored a career-high 11 points, all of which came in the first half.
The visitors used a 9-0 run late in the first half to take a six-point lead into the halftime locker room. In the second half, consecutive threes by Williams knotted up the score 90 seconds into the period at 32-32.
From there, both teams went back and forth, as the second half alone featured 13 lead changes and six ties.
With 2:11 to play, a basket by junior
Rahmir Moore gave Wagner a 53-52 advantage, before graduate student
Jahbril Price-Noel hit yet another clutch three on the Seahawks' ensuing possession to give Wagner a 56-54 advantage with 1:27 to play.
A pair of free throws by junior
DeLonnie Hunt with six seconds to play made it 58-55, as Wagner moved to 3-0 on the year at the Spiro Sports Center.
The Seahawks held Stony Brook to 14-37 (37.8%) shooting from the field on the night while converting on 6-15 (40%) of three-pointers on the night.
Wagner held a 27-2 advantage in bench points throughout the game, while junior
Brandon Brown led the Seahawks with 10 rebounds on the night.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Delaware State on Tuesday, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 pm.
