Javier Ezquerra's 20 points led five Seahawks in double figures as the Green and White earned a 82-52 victory over Neumann University in Wagner's home opener at the Spiro Sports Center on Monday night.
Dominating The Glass
Through three games, Wagner has been a rebounding force. The Seahawks rank eighth in the country and first in the Northeast Conference (NEC) with 16.67 offensive rebounds per game, while sitting 32
nd in the nation in rebounds per game at 44.33, which is also first in the conference.
Individually, senior
Brandon Brown ranks 28
th in the nation and first in the NEC with 10.7 rebounds per game.
A New Offensive Philosophy
Two weeks into the season, Wagner has had a different look offensively. With 27.7 three-point attempts per game, the Seahawks rank first in the NEC and 49
th in the country. The Seahawks average nine made threes per game, good for second in the conference.
Against Neumann, Wagner connected on 12 field goals from long distance.
Newcomers Make An Impact
Freshman
Keyontae Lewis contributed 19 points and nine rebounds in Wagner's loss at La Salle. After a two-point outing in the season-opener at Temple, Lewis led the Seahawks with 13 points in the second half against the Explorers.
Fellow first-year Seahawk
Julian Brown scored his first collegiate points on Monday night against Neumann, finishing with 14 points on the night.
Sophomores Step Up
Sophomore
Javier Ezquerra scored a career-high 20 points on 7-11 shooting against Neumann to lead the Seahawks.
Fellow sophomore
Rob Taylor II added a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Taylor now has more rebounds in three games than he did in 19 appearances last season and is averaging seven caroms per game, showing his vast improvement in the offseason.
Hunt Earns Prime Performer Honors
Junior
DeLonnie Hunt picked up NEC Prime Performer honors in week one. Hunt poured in a team-high 19 points on 8-18 shooting, and added four rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 76-73 overtime win at Temple last Monday.
Scouting The Stags
The Stags opened their season with losses against Wake Forest, New Hampshire, and Xavier. Last year, Wagner earned a tough 63-50 victory at Fairfield to close out non-conference play.
Up Next
Wagner will travel to Big East member Seton Hall on Sunday. Tip-off between the Seahawks and Pirates is scheduled for 3:00 pm. The game will be nationally televised on FS1.
