Men’s Basketball Hosts Neumann For 2022 Home Opener On Monday At 7:00 PM

WATCH | Live Stats | Game Notes

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team will host Division III member Neumann University on Monday night at 7:00 pm for the Seahawks' home opener at the Spiro Sports Center

Last Time Out

Wagner cut a double-digit deficit down to six points with under four minutes to play, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks fell 77-69 at Atlantic 10 member La Salle on Saturday.

Opening The Season With A Splash

The Seahawks trailed 57-42 with 7:38 to play, but fought back to force overtime before earning a 76-73 overtime win over Temple in the season-opener for both teams.

With 35 seconds to play, junior Rahmir Moore's jumper made it 69-66, before a clutch three by Jahbril Price-Noel with three seconds to play forced overtime at 69-69.

In the extra period, sophomore Rob Taylor II and Moore gave Wagner the early advantage and the Seahawks never looked back, outscoring the Owls 7-4 to earn the victory.

Home Opener

Wagner has won the last five home-openers at the Spiro Sports Center. The Seahawks earned a 77-59 victory over Hartford last season in the home opener.

Lewis Jumps On The Scene

Freshman Keyontae Lewis contributed 19 points and nine rebounds in Wagner's loss at La Salle. After a two-point outing in the season-opener at Temple, Lewis led the Seahawks with 13 points in the second half against the Explorers.

The 19 points mark the most points by a Wagner freshman since DeLonnie Hunt's 20 points against St. Francis Brooklyn two seasons ago. Hunt would later be named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Year.

Copeland's First Win

Monday night's victory over Temple marked the first victory for head coach Donald Copeland.

"They just battled…battled, scratched and stayed in it," Copeland said. "We talked about what the second half was going to be and they fought through. I'm proud of them. I'm proud of them."

November Statement Wins

Wagner's win over Temple marked the second straight year with an early statement victory on the road. Last season, the Seahawks upset Atlantic 10 member VCU 58-54 in their second game of the season. In 2016, Wagner earned a 67-58 win over UConn in the Green and White's season-opener.

Returners Step Up

Against La Salle, sophomore Zaire Williams set a new career-high with 20 points after tying his previous career-high with 16 points against Temple. In the victory over the Owls, DeLonnie Hunt led the Seahawks with 19 points, while sophomore along with graduate student Jahbril Price-Noel's 11 points. Additionally, sophomore Rob Taylor II was second on the team with seven rebounds.

Brown Dominates The Glass

In two games as a Seahawk, senior Brandon Brown is averaging 10 rebounds per game, which is first on the team. Last season, Brown averaged 7.1 boards per contest at Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

Scouting The Knights

Neumann enters Monday's game with a 1-2 record, most recently falling 67-63 against Lebanon Valley.

The Schedule

Next up, the Seahawks will host Fairfield on Friday, November 18, at 7:00 pm.
