Cowan's Season-High 21 Points Not Enough As Wagner Falls To St. Francis Brooklyn, 80-69, On Sunday

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team trimmed a 17-point third-quarter deficit down to nine with 1:18 remaining in the fourth quarter but the comeback attempt was halted as the Seahawks dropped an 80-69 home decision to the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers on Sunday afternoon from the Spiro Sports Center. 
 
With the loss, Wagner falls to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in Northeast Conference (NEC) action while St. Francis Brooklyn moves to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in league action. 

Alex Cowan was one of three Seahawks to score in double-figures as the Bowie, MD native scored a season-high 21 points in 27 minutes of action. Cowan added a team-leading five helpers to go along with two steals and two rebounds. Additionally, Cowan scored 10 of her 21 points from the free-throw line. 
 
Emilija Krista Grava netted 15 points while Zhaneia Thybulle added 14 points. The duo each pulled down a team-high eight caroms while combing for seven assists. 
 
St. Francis Brooklyn had four players reach double-digits, led by Nevena Dimitrijevic, who tallied a game-high 24 points on 6 of 10 shooting while hitting 9 of 10 from the free-throw line in 31 minutes of play. 
 
Khaleah Edwards, playing in her first game back on Staten Island, netted 17 points in 39 minutes. Ally Lassen ended with 15 points and eight rebounds while Alyssa Fisher chipped in 17 points and a team-high four helpers in the victory.

Wagner vs. St. Francis Brooklyn - Highlights

Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • The loss at home to St. Francis Brooklyn snapped Wagner's nine-game home winning streak over the Terriers, as it was the first win by SFBK on Grymes Hill since January 12, 2013,
  • Wagner retains a significant lead in the head-to-head series, 64-24. 
  • For the visitors, it marks the first time since 2006-07 that they have taken the season series from the Green & White. 
  • The Seahawks converted 17 points off 19 SFBK turnovers. 
  • For Cowan, the 21 points are a season-high, and the fourth time in her Seahawk career that she has eclipsed the 20-point plateau. 
    • The last time the 5-7 shooting guard scored 20 or more points came against Rider back on December 18, 2019, when she hit for 24 on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. 
    • She matched her career-high in free throws (10) and attempts (12), which were established in the Rider contest. 
    • Krista Grava has now scored in double-figures in four straight games while Thybulle has scored in double-figures in back-to-back contests. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Wagner opened the contest with a Thybulle three-pointer before Cowan added a layup that made it 5-2. 
  • St. Francis Brooklyn answered with an 8-0 run that gave the visitors a 10-5 lead after Lassen was able to bury the jumper off the feed from Edwards. 
  • Following a pair of made free throws by Krista Grava, the Terriers embarked on a 12-3 run over the next 4;35, building a 22-10 advantage, as Lassen capped the run with a layup. 
  • Thybulle was able to but a hold on the run with a layup of her own, as the Seahawks found themselves in a ten-point deficit after the first quarter of play, 22-12. 
 
Second Quarter…
  • Both teams traded baskets over the first two minutes of the frame with SFBK holding a 28-17 lead after a pull-up jumper by Dimitrijevic. 
  • The two teams continued to answer one another's scoring chances, as the Seahawks managed to trim the lead down to single-digits, 36-25 after Krista Grava was able to convert on the turnaround jumper off the feed from Cowan. 
  • Lassen reached double-digits with a layup from Edwards before EKG once again found the basket, as the Seahawks trailed 38-27 heading into the break. 
 
Third Quarter…
  • The Seahawks opened the second half with a quick hitter, as Drayah Heyward was able to bank in the wide-open layup that made it a nine-point game, 38-29. 
  • Dimitrijevic answered back with a triple before Krista Grava added two more to her ledger, as the lead was back to ten in favor of the Terriers, 41-31. 
  • St. Francis Brooklyn used an 11-4 run over the next four minutes to build their largest lead of the contest, 52-35, as Dimitrijevic once again converted from the outside. 
    • During the Terriers run, SFBK went a perfect 4 of 4 from the field with Dimitrijevic accounting for eight of the 11 points scored. 
  • The Seahawks did outscore the Terriers, 12-8, over the final 3:05, but trailed 60-47 heading into the fourth quarter. 
  
Fourth Quarter…
  • The Seahawks continued to chip away into the St. Francis Brooklyn lead, cutting it down to nine, 65-56, following a pair of makes by Cowan from the line. 
  • Wagner managed to cut it down to 74-65 following Cowan's three-pointer with 1:15 left to play. 
  • The two teams combined to shoot a combine 4 of 7 from the field over the final 4:42, but hit on 19 of 25 from the free-throw line during this span, with the Terriers making 13 of 15 while the Seahawks only hit 6 of 10 as the visitors secured the season series with 11-point road triumph. 
 
 
 Next Up For Wagner…
  • The Seahawks will remain home for one more contest, as they will welcome the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils on Thursday, February 3.
