Women's Basketball Posts Wire-To-Wire Road Win At Saint Francis U, 63-39

Loretto, PA - Behind three players scoring in double-figures, the Wagner women's basketball team picked up a 63-39 wire-to-wire road victory at Saint Francis U on Thursday evening.  
 
Kem Nwabudu led Wagner (11-7; 5-4 NEC) and all scorers with a game-high 19 points on an efficient 9 of 10 shooting from the field in 22 minutes of action. The Elmont, NY native also added a team-high three steals and grabbed two rebounds.
 
Emilija Krista Grava was the next Seahawk to reach double-figures, as the Lignate, Latvia native came within a rebound of her first double-double of the season, finishing the contest with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. 
 
Zhaneia Thybulle added 10 points while corralling eight rebounds and dishing out five helpers in 37 minutes of action. 
 
Saint Francis U (5-15; 5-4 NEC) did not have a player reach double-figures on the evening, as they were led by Sam Miller and Jenna Mastellone, who each netted six points. 
 
Jada Dapaa, coming off a career-high 23 rebounds, finished with six rebounds as did Aaliyah Moore. 
 
Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • With tonight's victory, Wagner snapped its longest losing streak of the season at four games.
    • Additionally, the Green & White have now swept the season series from Saint Francis U in back-to-back seasons, upping their win streak to four consecutive over the Red Flash. 
  • The Seahawks held a 40-18 halftime lead in tonight's contest.
    • It is the most this season that Wagner has scored in the first half, surpassing the 39 they netted against New Hampshire earlier this season. 
  • Of the 63 points scored tonight by the Seahawks, 36 of those came from inside-the-paint.
  • Wagner capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Red Flash, 15-1, and on fast break chances (10-0). 
  • The Seahawks forced 18 turnovers and scored 18 points off those mishaps. 
  • Wagner's three-point defense stifled the Red Flash, as they connected on just 2 of 11 from long range.
    • Over the two games this season, SFU was a combined 7 of 28 from three-point range against Wagner. 
  • Wagner held SFU to just seven first-quarter points, the fewest points scored by an opponent this season. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Wagner opened up the contest on a 10-2 run, hitting on 5 of 10 over the near six-minute run. 
  • Drayah Heyward got the scoring going early for the visitors, scoring the first four points of the contest. 
  • Jordan McLemore briefly halted the run by hitting one of two from the free-throw line before Thybulle was able to hit on a jumper that pushed the lead to nine, 12-3, at the 3:19 mark. 
  • The Seahawks doubled the lead, 15-7, to end the first quarter. 
 
Second Quarter…
  • Wagner opened the second quarter on a 9-2 run, highlighted by Alex Cowan, who made the tough runner in the paint and completed the three-point play from the line. 
  • The Seahawks closed out the frame outscoring SFU, 16-7, as Wagner connected on 6 of 8 shooting over the five-minute span while holding the Red Flash to just 3 of 7 shooting and forcing two turnovers. 
 
Third Quarter…
  • When the teams returned for the second half, Wagner continued to add to their run, upping it to a 25-7 spurt over an 11-minute stretch, as the Seahawks continued their hot shooting, hitting on a collective 9 of 18 while SFU was held to just 3 of 13 with a total of five turnovers. 
  • Nwabudu and Krista Grava continued to anchor the offense, scoring nearly half of the Seahawk points (12) during this run, with Nwabudu netting seven points. 
 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • Over a six-minute stretch, Wagner scored eight of the total points in building their largest lead of the contest, 61-31, as Nwabudu netted her 19th point of the game off the feed from Thybulle. 
  • Both teams went to their bench, which provided a brief spark for the Red Flash, as they outscored the Seahawks, 8-2.
  • Marisa Sanchez-Henry netted the final point in Wagner's 11th win of the season, as she was able to elude her defender with a well-executed crossover on her way to the hoop. 
 
 
 Next Up For Wagner…
  • Wagner will look for the season split on Saturday, as they welcome St. Francis Brooklyn. 
  • Tipoff from the Spiro Sports Center is set for 4:00 p.m.
