Women's Basketball Drops First League Game Of The Season At St. Francis Brooklyn, 62-55

Brooklyn Heights, NY - The Wagner women's basketball team overcame a 33-31 halftime deficit to outscore St. Francis Brooklyn 18-4 in the third quarter. The Terriers held the visitors to just six fourth-quarter points as the Green & White dropped its first Northeast Conference (NEC) game of the season, 62-55, on Saturday afternoon at the Daniel Lynch '38 Gymnasium. 
 
Wagner (10-4; 4-1 NEC) was paced by Drayah Heyward and Emilija Krista Grava, who each finished with nine points. For Heyward, she corralled a team-leading seven rebounds.  
 
Kem Nwabudu and Alex Cowan each netted eight points with Nwabudu grabbing six rebounds in her 28 minutes of action. Zhaneia Thybulle chipped in seven points and seven assists. 
 
St. Francis Brooklyn (7-6; 3-2 NEC) had three players score in double-figures, led by Alyssa Fisher, who hit for a game-high 13 points. Khaleah Edwards chipped in 12 points while Nevena Dimitrijevic contributed 11 points. 
 
Inside-The-Boxscore...
  • Today's result at St. Francis Brooklyn snapped the Seahawks' five-game winning streak over the Terriers. 
  • For only the third time this season, Wagner allowed an opponent to convert on 30.0 percent or higher from three-point range, as St. Francis Brooklyn hit on 8 of 15 from long distance while limiting Wagner to just 4 of 13. 
  • The Seahawks held a 27-23 edge on the boards. 
  • SFBK converted 24 points off 24 Wagner turnovers. 
  • 30 of Wagner's 55 points came from inside-the-paint
  • The Green & White capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 16 points on the second effort. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED…
First Quarter…
  • Thybulle kicked off the scoring for the Seahawks with a three-pointer before Fisher answered back with three straight points for the home team. 
  • The Seahawks outscored SFBK, 6-2, over the next 2:19, capped off by a Raven Pitt jumper with 3:44 to go in the first quarter, giving the visitors a 9-6 lead.  
  • St. Francis Brooklyn answered back with a 7-0 burst of their own, capped by an Isabella Posset triple, putting SFBK ahead, 13-9, in the later stages of the opening quarter. 
  • Katrice Jackson muscled in two points followed by a layup from Heyward that knotted the game at 13-13 before Posset was able to put one in just before the horn sounded. 

Second Quarter...
  • St. Francis Brooklyn upped their lead to seven, 20-13, following a three-pointer by Dimitrijevic, forcing the Seahawks to call for time. 
  • When play resumed, Alex Cowan trickled home her first points of the contest, hitting on a three-pointer off the feed by Thybulle before Jaila Lee responded with two on the other end, as SFBK went up 22-16. 
  • Dimitrijevic added her second triple of the game that increased the margin up to nine, 25-16, with 6:19 left to go before the break. 
  • Wagner began to seize the momentum, embarking outscoring the Terriers, 12-6, over a four-minute span that cut the deficit to just three, 31-28, as Krista Grava was able to convert on the layup chance. 
  • With just 25 seconds left before halftime, Lina Loceniece dialed up her second three of the game, tying the game at 31 but Posset had the final bucket just before time expired as St. Francis Brooklyn entered the break with a two-point edge, 33-31. 
 
Third Quarter…
  • Both teams traded baskets over the first minute of the third quarter that saw the score move to 35-35 after Nwabudu was able to hit in the paint. 
  • From that point, it would be all Wagner, as the Seahawks embarked on a 14-2 run that saw the visitors end the third quarter with their largest lead, 49-37.
    • Wagner hit on 6 of 11 over the near 7:30 run as Heyward was one of the catalysts, scoring five of the 14 points.
    • The Seahawks held SFBK at bay, as the Terriers managed to hit on a 1 of 9 clip, a Lee layup at the 4:52 mark. 
 
Fourth Quarter…
  • In a role reversal of the third quarter, the two teams couldn't hit to start the quarter before Ally Lassen was able to hit on one of two from the line.
  • Krista Grava netted her final points of the contest at the 8:10 mark, which gave Wagner a 51-38 cushion. 
  • Over the next 3:27, St. Francis Brooklyn outscored Wagner, 17-4, as the Terriers hit on all five shots from the field, which include a trio from long range. 
    • Fisher and Edwards accounted for 13 of the 17 points during the SFBK run as Fisher's three with 4:43 left in regulation tied the game at 55. 
  • The Terriers were able to close out the game on a 7-0 run that halted Wagner's attempt to go 5-0 in NEC play for the first time since the 1987-88 season. 
 
Next Up For Wagner…
  • Wagner closes out their four-game road swing on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 17), as they will head to Teaneck, NJ to take on the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights.
