Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College softball team fell 8-7 to Mount St. Mary's in the first game of a senior day doubleheader on Grymes Hill on Sunday afternoon.
The second game of the day was suspended due to rain after 2.5 innings, with Wagner leading 8-0.
Prior to the game, the Seahawks celebrated their seniors in a pregame ceremony.
Wagner quickly took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by junior
Natalie Del Ponte and RBI singles by junior
Mackenzie Vogler and junior
Makenzie Miller.
The Mount tied the game with four runs in the top of the second, but Del Ponte once again gave Wagner the lead with an RBI single in the fourth, putting Wagner up 5-4.
In the fifth inning, senior
Alexis Silinonte doubled the Wagner lead with an RBI to give Wagner a 6-5 advantage.
The Mount scored two runs in the sixth and added two in the seventh to take the lead. The Seahawks attempted a late comeback, but Silinonte's second RBI of the afternoon wasn't enough, as the Mountaineers closed out the game for the victory.
The Seahawks combined for nine hits throughout the contest, with Del Ponte and graduate student
Zoe Bender recording two hits apiece.
