Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team improved to 3-2 and 3-1 in conference on Monday afternoon, beating Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Bryant, 1-0.
Freshman
Emma Brushingham's first career Seahawk goal proved to be the game winner as freshman goalkeeper
Erin Franklin, who stopped both shots that came at her, recorded her first career shutout victory.
The Green & White outshot the Bulldogs 24-3, the highest shot total in program history, while their 12 shots on target were the most since the 5-0 season finale victory over Merrimack back in November of 2019.
The Seahawks applied heavy offensive pressure throughout the first half, outshooting the Bulldogs 9-2 and earning eight penalty corners to Bryant's one. However, goalkeeper Lyndsay Swanston made two saves and kept Wagner off the board, sending the teams into the locker room tied 0-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Seahawks came out with even more offensive pressure, culminating in the first score of the game when
Emma Brushingham grabbed a loose ball in the circle and sent it past goalkeeper Marijn Jaarsma for her first career goal.
The Green & White attack would record 15 shots and earn seven penalty corners in the final 30 minutes but nine saves from Jaarsma would keep the Bulldogs within one goal. However, the Seahawk attack held strong and allowed only a singular shot in the second half and no shots on target, helping guide Wagner to a 1-0 victory.
Leading the Seahawk attack was
Kira Mordvinov with three shots, followed closely by Brushingham,
Agustina Deharbe, and
Julia Cruces Pastorino with two.
Elena Andreyev,
Arianna Martina, and
Eline Schuur would each record a single shot.
In addition to setting a school record for shots in a game, the Seahawks 15 penalty corners were also the most earned in a single game in school history.
