Seahawks Stage Late Rally In Series Opener At Merrimack; Fall 5-3 On Saturday

Andover, MA – Down three runs in the ninth, the Wagner baseball team staged a late rally by loading the bases while pushing across a run but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 5-3 in the series opener at Merrimack on Saturday afternoon.

Wagner falls to 6-12 on the season and 4-9 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while Merrimack moves to 10-14 and 6-7 in league contests.

Cody Bey powered the Seahawks offense on the afternoon, going 3 for 5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Ethan Valdez finished 2 for 2 with a run scored, while Wyatt Duncan drove in the Seahawks' third RBI of the day.

Ryan Lauk (1-4) took the loss after going eight innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. The Mullica Hill, NJ native didn't issue a walk and recorded five strikeouts. Lauk has notched at least four strikeouts in each of his seven outings this season, including four outings with at least seven strikeouts.

Nick Shumski, Thomas Joyce, and Thomas Crowley each had two hits for the Warriors on the day with Shumski and Crowley driving in two RBI apiece. Michael Golankiewicz drove in the other RBI for Merrimack.

Vin Zappulla earned the win after going seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits; he walked three and struck out three. Timmy Kalantzakos threw a scoreless eighth inning before giving the ball to Justin Butera, who earned the save.

After Wagner stranded a runner on first in the top of the first, Merrimack got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Joey Porricelli led off the game for the Warriors with a single up the middle.

Lauk was able to retire Alex Haba for the first out but fell behind Shumski. With the count in Shumski's favor at 2-1, he connected on a two-run homer to left that put the home team in front, 2-0.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Seahawks evened the score at two in the top of the third. Valdez drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position after stealing second. With one out, Bey worked the count in his favor to 3-1. On the next pitch from Zappulla, the Long Beach, CA native belted a deep fly that cleared the wall in left-center for his first home run of the season.

Lauk settled into the outing, retiring the Warriors in order in the bottom half of the inning. Merrimack, however, broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice on a pair of hits that gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead. Joyce sent a one-out single through the right side. The next batter, Crowley, connected on the go-ahead, two-run home run as Merrimack doubled its lead.

Wagner threatened in the top of the fifth, as Valdez and Henry Martinez each sent one-out singles. Bey then grounded to third, as Merrimack's third baseman was able to fire one home, where the Warriors' catcher slapped the tag on Valdez for the second out.

The Warriors tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the seventh to go up by three, 5-2. Joyce led off the frame with a ground-rule double to left and moved to third on a Crowley base hit to left. Golankiewicz grounded out to second as Joyce crossed the plate for the fifth run of the contest.

Butera came in for Merrimack to start the ninth. Freddy Sabido greeted the Warriors' closer with an infield single and moved to second on the throwing error by the shortstop. Mike Ruggiero followed with a hard-hit single to third, as the Seahawks had two men on with no outs.

After Griffin Schneider popped out to third for the first out, the Seahawks elected for a pinch-hitter, as Caleb Ward batted for Valdez and drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases.

Duncan came on to hit for Martinez and lofted the first pitch he saw to left field, scoring Sabido on the sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 5-3. Bey stepped in as the potential go-ahead run but flew out to center to end the ballgame.

These two teams conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader. Both games will be of the nine-inning variety and the first pitch from Andover, MA is set for noon.
