Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's field hockey team dropped a tightly contested 2-1 Northeast Conference (NEC) battle against the LIU Sharks on Thursday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who fall to 2-2; 2-1 NEC on the season, got on the board only five minutes into the opening quarter.
Elena Andreyev registered her first career goal on a penalty corner, with feeds from
Agustina Deharbe and
Eline Schuur to take the early lead.
The Sharks, who improve to 2-1; 2-1 NEC, continued to create chances after the Green & White goal, but failed to find the back of the net in the first 30 minutes. Both teams would head to the dressing room with Wagner leading 1-0.
After both teams recorded six shots in the first half, LIU came out with improved offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Seahawks six to two in the final 30 minutes.
With a little less than three minutes in the third quarter, LIU would get themselves on the board when Sol Espana tallied her second score of the season on the feed from Emilce Paez. The quarter would end before anymore scoring, sending the teams into the final stanza tied at 1-1.
The Shark attack utilized the momentum built in the third quarter to take the lead a little over three minutes into the fourth frame. Michaela Zabicki found Sammy Bell inside the circle, where she spun around and found the back of the cage.
Wagner would increase their own offensive pressure from then on but wouldn't be able to find an equalizer, as the game ended with LIU leading 2-1.
On the day, the Seahawks were outshot 12 to eight, while freshman goalkeeper
Erin Franklin recorded a game-high four saves. Offensively, the Green & White were led by Deharbe's three shots, followed closely by
Kira Mordvinov and Andreyev who each tallied two.
The Seahawks will stay on Grymes Hill for their final home contest with the Bryant Bulldogs on Thursday, April 5. It will be senior day for the Green & White, as second-year head coach
Niki Miller will honor her lone senior,
Claire Quigley, pregame. Game time is set for 3:00 PM and will be streamed live on NECFrontRow.
